I saw the first episode and thought it was pretty funny, but I had to TiVo the second one. I'll watch that one later on in the week.

You got that right! In fact, I tried to watch it but when the laugh track exploded after the first 2 brutal jokes I quickly turned the station.

Besides, wasn't this concept done 20 years ago when Chris Elliot had a show about being a middle-aged paperboy still living with his parents?

I watched this show last night and I thought it was awful. To each his own I guess...

                  Re: The Winner

You know, the show has POTENTIAL. (The key being "potential")

The things that are going against are numerous tho.

                  1. The brutal laugh track. I think it'd be a lot more bearable if they just scrapped the laugh track altogether and have the actors play it mostly straight with their lines so that it has an almost ironic humour to it.

                  2. Retroactive jokes aren't funny. Let's face it, making jokes that are dated just won't fly. It's ok to poke fun of things from '94 and earlier but to make a joke about how OJ wouldn't hurt a fly and Clinton being a family man don't work on so many levels because at the time the characters have no clue of what's to come. Now if the series was taking place today and someone made a comment like that it'd have an ironic twist to it but the actor would have to say the lines in an cynical way.

                  3. The actors...The mother is annoying as all hell and the love interest smiled way too much for my taste. It's like the actress was just happy to be on a primetime TV show!

That being said the idea of a complete loser trying to live out his "wonder years" at age 32 is a good concept and can be explored with a lot of funny results but the show needs to be set in the present day with no laugh track and better actors. You know it's bad when the kid actor is the best one in the whole bunch.
