    Re: Hostel Part 2

Perhaps it's time to call him Eli "Uwe Boll" Roth because he sure knows how to make bad movies. The movie is basically the same as the original expect the main characters are female (un-attractive too) instead of male.

I found myself laughing during this film because of the terrible acting. Outside of focusing on the 2 customers (one of them was Alan from Season 1 of 24), I can't really say anything good about Hostel 2. Do we really need violence against children? Given the right budget and assitants, I'm sure most people in this thread could make a better "horror" movie than Hostel 2.

Even though Hostel 1 and 2 are garbage, I'm sure will we get a Hostel 3 within the next 2 years.

      Re: Hostel Part 2

Caught the movie over the weekend, was decent but not nearly as good as the original.

What made Hostel great IMO was the mystery behind it all...how it was operated, by whom, why it was going and no one stopped it, who participated and why, etc. and sadly most if not all of that is answered in the sequel. Now don't get me wrong, I liked how Eli tried to expand on it all and give us a backstory of the factory and it's inner workings (gotta love the bidding scene) but it took away whatever mystery and intrigue the series has. It took it from something that was not only violent, brutal and visceral but also extremely mystifying to something that was now about violence. And while not all that bad, I wish it wouldn't have gone that way.

Also while still violent and nasty in parts, the sequel does not hold up to the original in that dept. The only parts that got to me were Lorna's demise (truly and deeply f'd up...that was insane and freaked the hell outta me) and Ruggero Dedato's cameo...which might I add was badass. It was messy at times but it seemed more forced and over the top to me than the more realistic nature of the first if you will.

And that brings me to the so called "most shocking ending in horror cinema" that Eli raved about before the movie hit...what a letdown. It was twisted and crazy but it didn't really shock me...I don't know. It more had me wide eyed at what I was seeing (you know what I'm talking about lol) compared to being shocked and saying wow. It was a cool ending that fit the story but it was nowhere near the most shocking ending ever...that title goes to Sleepaway Camp.

Enough about the plot and gore, how were the chicks in it?

Bland, generic, run of the mill female horror characters.

          Cliched and paper thin.

I completely disagree, what would you have Roth do, not answer any of the "mysteries" and just have a clone of the first movie? Then everyone would have slammed him for just copying the original and adding nothing new. I think this is a rare case where the sequel trumps the original in nearly every possible way.

Here's a pretty good way to sum up what Hostel II was about. It runs down the entire movie from beginning to end, so there are indeed spoilers:

              Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60

No I see what you're saying and I agree with you to an extent...I just thought the entire backstory didn't needed to be told, leave a little bit to the imagination as that's what made it scary to me.

And to be honest, it IS a clone of the original...what exactly is different outside of the victims being females? Not much.

                  Re: Hostel Part 2

I was a huge fan of the original, but over the last year, gore has started bothering me a lot. To the point, where unless it's a part of the story, I can't watch the movie and enjoy it. Not sure what happened with me, but I've grown tired of gore for gore's sake. Now, the classics don't bother me, the original Dawn of the Dead for example. Not sure why, maybe it's because it's gory, but not for gore's sake. Not sure.

Anyway, got a chance to check out Hostel 2 over the weekend. Now, I haven't been able to sit through and rewatch Hostel, so I wasn't expecting much. I watched it after watching 28 Weeks Later, which I enjoyed. So, I got 10-15 mins into Hostel 2 and knew it wasn't for me. In fact, I'd put it up there in one of the worst "horror" films I've ever seen. It's not horror, nothing is scary, it's just let's make gore. Not sure if this came out last year or before if I would have loved it. But something with me has definitely changed to the point where this movie just disgusted me.

I feel like horror is on such a decline, the originality is gone. If we can't do a remake, we take a weak story and add a ton of gore to it. Come on, if Neil Marshall and Tim Sullivan can't get big time movies soon, this genre may have dark days ahead. It won't ever die, horror fans are too fanatical, but the new breed just aren't doing it. I had high hopes for Rob Zombie and Eli Roth. Zombie made his remake, which lowered him a notch, and now Eli is struggling getting a story out there, without adding tons of useless gore. I know many fans who are now worried about Cell when it cames out and if he'll butcher it. (not to mention, he's also writing a Heroes : Origins Episode.)

So, is it me? am I losing interest in horror or is horror losing me? the last year, has produced many horror films which I found terrible, and I'm worried the trend will continue.

EG, I agree with you that horror has taken a turn for the worst with some of the movies that their churning out. But for every piece of garbage out there, we also have some good releases...ala....Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween Remake, Wrong Turn 2, The Host to name a few good titles that have come out this year. I know some of these titles you haven't checked out yet that I have listed and would recommend viewing those when you have an opportunity.

I don't like some of the remakes that are being made either and wish they would have just left these movies alone all together. One that continues to come to mind is Hills Have Eyes 2...............this movie was so bad only because of the rape scene + the woman that was pregnant at the beginning giving birth to the canibal baby.....which meant she was also raped. I just found that stuff to be very disgusting that anyone would do something like that. I don't remember the original Hills 2, but I don't think they did anything this radical unless someone could remind me.

Now there are rumors of a Child's Play remake which I'm fine with, but the next one is just mind boggling as they are going to ruin The Exorcist if they do remake it. Look at what they did with the 2 prequels, one was good and the other was just not that great. I have faith in Michael Bay and his Dunes production company to give us a good Friday 13th. I guess we will see what happens.

It's been like this ever since Saw became popular. The Hills Have Eyes is another example... There's Turista... Descent?

All the same types of films. Remember when Scream made it big? We then had I Know What You Did Last Summer and all these other cheesy SHOCK moment films bombard the theaters...

Torture porn is slowly starting to die...just give it another year. We may get regular installments of Saw, but we'll get a lot less like Hostel or Turistas.

Slowly they're once again realizing that gore alone doesn't hook people, but gore with a suspenseful storyline that gets someone caring is amazing.

I'm not helping torture porn die though, I saw Hostel 2, Turistas, and plan on seeing Saw 4 in theater lol. I know they're not great movies, but just happened that most were out when I randomly wanted to see a movie. I may skip on Saw 4 and see 30 days of night instead, that sounds cooler. We'll see.

Everything comes and goes in cycles, and these "torture" flicks are on their way out for now, until the next phase comes along. But right now we also have running concurrently is the "remake" phase of movies which will also die down within the next year or two since it just recently started a few years ago. I love my horror movies and no matter how tired I get of some of these genres, I still will watch whatever is released. I got sick of the whole Scream ripoffs, but still watched them regardless.

I mentioned it earlier, but I think some of the titles to release the last few months have been good that I listed and would recommend to anyone looking for something different.

I'm getting sick of it, too. Granted, I had NO intent on seeing Saw IV, but then I realized it's actually separating itself from the original trilogy enough and will attach much more to Saw V and Saw VI, so now I'll be seeing it Friday... but Hostel II was crap. The Descent was good, but that has been the only one I've liked since Saw. Although a sequel for The Descent is about the last thing on my list.

However, Hostel II didn't suck because it was "gore for gore's sake". Oh no... it creates its own means of suckiness. Though that helped, I've sat through movies that were like that, and it has appealed to me. Hell, this movie made me appreciate the first installment so much more, because this one was just crap. Why did we have to see little ol' Dawn Wiener topless in this movie? We didn't, and it wasn't my favorite site either. We didn't even get lesbian action between the two main characters.

I'm sorry, but this movie was crap. I'll never watch it again, never.

The SAW movies have always been enjoyable for me and the story alone has been the main focus for my interests. While all the traps/torture is the main component of the movie, which many have enjoyed for me its been the story about Jigsaw and Amanda, and why he has done this to these people. I like how SAW I-III were a trilogy, then SAW IV-VI will be another trilogy with SAW IV being the bridge between the first and second trilogy as this takes a different direction with the next trilogy.

I was reading today over at BD that SAW V & VI are going to be filmed at the same time next year.

I agree, the Descent was excellent.

Does every single horror thread have to turn into the "greatness" that is Saw. UGH One good movie, one decent sequel, and a complete pile of dung 3rd part.
