Dueling guitarists
o.k-we had threads about who's the best guitarist-let's not forget the twin lead or the lead and rythmn guitarists. I was just talking about Thin Lizzy on another post and it got me thinking about great twin guitars(example:The boys are back in town or Jailbreak). Also,Judas Priest's Tipton and Downing-Iron Maiden's Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Ac/Dc's Young & Young. Those were(and in some cases)still some of the biggest heavy hitters in hard rock/metal. I took the easy ones-.................your turnByurrulzIdon'tfollowTags: None -

Re: Dueling guitarists
The Allman Brothers Band prior to Duane's tragic death would be another good example. The Drive-By Truckers stick out if you're considering modern rock since they produce a kind of "wall of guitars" sound ala Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Re: Dueling guitarists
Some of the best music ever was done in multi guitar band fashion. Skynyrd was a perfect example of the wall you mentioned-same with the Outlaws, another 3 guitar player band. A often over-looked southern fried rock band-good stuff.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: Dueling guitarists
Billy Corgan & James Iha, although Corgan did play pretty much all of the guitar on Siamese Dream, Iha more than proved his worth on Gish & Mellon Collie. They had a great throwback guitar sound, really different from the other early-mid 90s rock bands.Comment

Re: Dueling guitarists
Monkey & Head on Korn's first was flawless. The effects they got out of their 7 string guitars and the bouncing back and forth stereo effects of the mix, make it a masterpiece for that really loud stereo you got in your car-Ball tongue-must be played loud always!ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: Dueling guitarists
Going back into the time tunnel, it was pretty hard to argue with the multi-ax attack of The Outlaws or .38 Special. The Smithereens also built a formidable wall of sound with multiple guitars.
Take care,

Re: Dueling guitarists
I'm not overly familiar with either band outside of a handful of songs by each, but would Megadeth and Dragonforce fit into this discussion? Different style than what's been brought up so far, but both feature dueling guitarists so far as I know.Comment

Re: Dueling guitarists
Metal's competitive nature has resulted in a lot of the genre (and its numerous subgenres) being packed with excellent guitarists. Alex Skolnick, Devin Townsend, Alexi Laiho, Jason Becker, Jeff Loomis, Ben Weinman, etc., etc.
A combo of Mustaine/Poland, Mustaine/Friedman, even Mustaine/Pitrelli, etc. should definitely be up there. Rust in Peace is the last mainstream metal classic to feature brilliant solo trade-offs, IMO.

Herman Li and Sam Toteman from Dragonforce are excellent players, but they haven't delivered a classic album yet IMO. Of the "newer" duos, I'd say Matthew Bachand and Jonathan Donais from Shadows Fall deserve a nod. Their work on just Of One Blood and The Art of Balance puts them up there.
Some bands have lead/rhythm guitar tandems or twin-leads, but have great records based less on their performance and more on the songwriting. Mastodon, Anthrax, and Lamb of God immediately come to mind.
Hetfield/Hammett is a classic duo.
And of course, gotta represent my namesake:
Not always in key or utilizing sound theory, but always kick-***. Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King, Slayer.
