By the subject titled "dueling guitarists", it seems to imply that both guitarists share lead responsibilities. That would probably rule out Izzy Stradlin/Slash, and AC/DC's Young brothers. Like the original post, KK Downing/Glenn Tipton and Dave Murray/Adrian Smith are the best that comes to mind, especially Murray/Smith. Almost every one of Iron Maiden's songs feature them doing some nice harmonies.

What was the setup for the Scorpions? Did Rudolf Schenker and Michael Schenker shared leads, or was it Michael did all the leads?

Good point, AC. Metal and Southern rock are about the only rock genres that regularly feature dueling lead guitarists.

Slash was the definite lead for G 'N R, with Izzy a kick-azz rhythm player. But I still loved them, so I'll keep them on my list!

True. I think Michael was the lead. Rudolf just had a better personally. Even when Michael left they got a new lead guitar.

I guess I shouldn't have named this thread "Dueling guitarists". I was on a Thin Lizzy jag yesterday and was thinking about how many great 2 or more guitarist bands are out there that really work together,rather than one just dominating and the other guy is a human click track.

The song "heading out to the highway" by Judas Priest is a perfect example of great guitar players locked in and not trying to upstage each other. I saw Priest on the "Point of entry" tour many years ago,and man they blew the doors off the arena! I think that is where I really learned to appreciate the 2 guitarist band.
Everyone is throwing out good stuff here! I was just getting ready to add King and Hanneman,but SLAYER beat me. I also really liked Iron Maiden when they started making the guitars sound almost like violins. Like the Somewhere in time CD/Powerslave etc. good stuff

Most "Bighair" bands had alot of talent that was glossed over because they looked and acted pretty much the same. I'm not saying that's bad-I'm saying there was alot of talent in the 80's-guys that were pretty well schooled guitarwise,great sounding amps,and a ton of attitude! I also like to listen to the Boneyard Channel on XM radio. Good bighairband stuff........

I'm with ya. That stuff is a guilty pleasure for me. There weren't any Lennons or McCartneys, but a lot of the music, though generic, still rips today.

I gotta throw in Joe Perry & Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. If you look at the Aerosmith catalog-those guys had tons of good songs. Also,while I'm on retro-road-the Yardbirds had some amazing guitar interaction and some heavy hitter guitar players throughout the years.
Here's a oldie but goodie no one has probably heard of-Hound Dog Taylor and the house rockers! Hound Dog played a slide guitar that George Thorogood lists as a big inspiration. The rythmn guitar player for the house rockers-can't think of his name right now,was very solid and talented . He even pulled occasional leads. Hound Dog Taylor-IMO-was the Jimi Hendrix of slide guitar-R.I.P. to both of these guitar greats

Yep,it was Mathias Jabs...awesome guitar player.
Anyway....I'm not sure how many people listened to them....but Stryper was AWSOME.
The twin guitars of Michael Sweet and Oz Fox omfg........
Alot of folks dismissed them due to singing about God,but let me be the first to say....the guitar work by those 2 was something brilliant.

Wow that is a bast from my past. I was a big Stryper fan. I remember they always wore black and yellow. Oz was a great guitarist. I met them in the 80's at a youth group convention. Great guys and very talented, but singing about God was not going to make them as big as they could have been if they sang about sex, drugs and Rock-N-Roll!

Dude thats awesome. My friends had the pleasure of seeing them live (I never did) but they actually brought me a bible that they threw out at the end of their shows,as well as a guitar pick from Tim Gaines.

I do agree..if they sang anything other than about God,they would've rated right up there with the best acts of the 80's.
I do remember they did attempt a "crossover" record called Against the law,but is was received very poorly due to them already being tagged "Christian rock" and alot of their loyal fans felt like Stryper abandoned them.
They were truly gifted,and should rank right up there with other "twin guitar" acts.

yeah I remember that. I felt bad for them. Also, Sweet has a solo career going. I listen to one of the tracks it was pretty good.

I did too,the record was pretty good,but with them already being tagged...they should've known it wouldn't have been very well recieved.

I haven't had a chance to hear Michael's solo stuff..is it Stryper like?
I mean heavy or is it more mellow. I always thought he had a great voice,especially with the Ballads.
I remember my friends (girls) liked them alot...so I made sure to have Stryper in the old tape deck at all times.

Put on one of their ballads like "first love" or "Honestly"...and whewwww it was on like Donkey kong

Tesla.

Fank Hannon and Tommy Skeeoch. Both can play lead guitar and both have written popluar rock songs for the band.
