For the Law and Order fans Sam Waterston is an underrated actor. I saw him in a movie where he played Abraham Lincoln.

Although he is well known I think Johnny Depp is underrated as an actor. He can play such a broad range of characters and play them well. Same with Billy Bob Thornton.

If we're bringing TV actors into the mix, then I need to give props to Julian McMahon of Nip/Tuck and Charmed fame. He is a helluva actor who goes very unappreciated.

OK, these are ensembles, but the entire cast of "Friday Night Lights" and "The Wire."

I don't watch a ton of movies or TV, but I had seen very few of the actors in these shows before I started watching them, and every actor in these respective shows is fantastic.

Seriously, how is Ed Norton underrated or unrecognized? Who underrates him? He's been nominated for 2 academy awards and whenever I see lists of people's favorite actors he's consistently on them. The same goes for Don Cheadle, he was underrated for a while a few years back but I don't think so these days. People know who this guy is and recognize his talent. Clive Owen is in that boat as well in that he was underrated, but he's near the top of a lot of people's list now. And I just can't believe I saw Jim Carey posted.

Anyway, here's my list:

Idris Elba: If you've seen the Wire you know it was a travesty for him (or the show for that matter) to not get an Emmy or something for his role as Stringer Bell. Now you talk about presence, he has loads.

Chiwetel Ejiofor: I agree with everything Defel said. That guy was the main reason I enjoyed Four Brothers so much.

Djimon Hounsou: He's been nominated for Oscars but for the most part, nobody knows his name. He's recognized people see his face but they still don't know his name. For that reason, he gets left off a lot people's list and doesn't get the props he deserves. It's pronounced Jie-mon Hahn-soo, so repeat his name over and over in your head.

John Leguizamo: Dude is so talented and versatile. He reminds me of a Hispanic Jamie Foxx. He's yet to get that defining role that I believe will take him over the top.

Terence Howard would have been on my list a couple of years ago but people are now paying attention.
