MAJOR laptop monitor troubles (possible fault connection, need help)

Okay, so I got this computer in August right before the school year, so while it's new, it's no longer under warranty. Let me also say that I bring my laptop to almost all of my classes wrapped securely in a bath towel in my backpack (and I skate to most classes).

Anyway, for the last few days, I have ignored this to others, because I figured that I could live with it for a little while and see if it would solve itself. It's having more problems. My computer monitor is having issues such that it "freezes" and then "burns" (sort of an oxymoron, I know).

It "freezes" in the sense that what you see on screen locks up. Behind the scenes, everything is actually functional. If you move the mouse to one direction, it actually still moves there, but you can't see it on screen. So, it's not the computer itself, which is probably the best thing that can happen right now.

It then "burns" instantly after, in the sense that the monitor becomes bleak with distorted colors, gets bright, you see weird colored interlaced lines on the screen, and gives a dark burn thereafter. It's still frozen at this time.

The only way for me to allow for this computer to work is to use it one-handed. When I put pressure on the bottom-left corner of the back of the panel with my hand, it seems to work normally. Therefore, I can only use my right hand at the time(s). Because of all of these things, I feel that it's some sort of strange disconnection with the monitor, or even perhaps some damaged things (potentially due to my transporting the laptop daily).

One more quick thing: Every time I decide to change the monitor's angle, it has a very distinct CLICK in it that I can hear and feel when I first move it, like it hitches or something.

Since all of that is hard to visualize and make out, I made a digital recording of what the effect is like, and what it's doing. Hopefully somebody can tell me what's going on with my monitor and what I can do to fix it. I'm typing this entire post "blinded" (with both hands but a "burnt" and "frozen" screen). Sorry if there are any typing errors.

    Here's that video:

I will eventually call HP, but I don't know if they want me to be sending them a YouTube video about this effect right now, so I'm coming to you guys first. ANY help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

It seems like you may just have either a loose or bad connection between the display and the motherboard. From what I can remember, on older Dells, you could take off the keyboard and everything was underneath. There was a small ribbon cable that came from the display panel to the motherboard. I'm not sure if that's how HPs are laid out.

Thanks. I'll be taking in as many suggestions as possible, talk to my dad thereafter, and see exactly what I can say to HP so that they can understand this as easily as possible. There have to be better words or metaphors than "freeze" and "burn".

By the way, disregard most of the sounds in this video. No, my computer isn't making crashing sounds or anything. My dorm door was open and there were noises outside, and then I was trying to zoom with the camera but it wasn't working. The only sounds that are actually from the computer are when I'm using the panel. That itself is interesting that it has begun making that sound.

Most likely it is the connection, should be a ribbon on the left backside running into the sccreen.

Hook it up to an external monitor and see if it does the same thing.

Okay, well I haven't really tried anything yet, but I think I'm going to send it in. In the meantime, my dad will let me borrow his laptop starting later today. How would I explain my problem to Compaq? (I'm sorry, I kept saying HP for some reason)

Just tell them you see the colors of the rainbow as it fades to black. Then its back to normal if you touch/move it.

I will give you some bad news, if your warranty is out (check though as you usually have 1 year), this will not be a cheap fix. Most likely the motherboard is going to have to be replaced to fix the videocard, since they are usually soldered to the board. If the LCD is broke, again lots of money. Just hope that it is the cable running from the board to the LCD.
