Re: Americans are not dumber than everyone else

I don't think Americans are THAT stupid but I can tell you that Americans are in my experience are more provincial in their outlook but have such a superiority complex. (at least the leadership does)

This isn't a knock against Americans it's just that most don't bother to see the world or really try to learn about different cultures and ideas without looking through the prism of American nationalism and social mores. People in other countries travel more, are generally better at getting along with people in those other countries and try to see all sides of complex issues.

So while Americans aren't stupid they're more ignorant.

I bet if you go to other countries, all the average joes walking around on the streets during the day are incredibly smart.

I agree with this post 100%. I would just add a couple of things. The average American citizen, IMO, is even worse than those in leadership when it comes to having a superiority complex. Many, many American never have any significant contact with anyone from a truly different cultural background. So their thought process is even more insular then that of their leaders.

When this issue comes up one of the things that we sometimes fail to remember is the relative young age of this(The U.S.) country.

You would expect that a nation that is still in its infancy(contextually speaking) would be very self absorbed in the same way that a real two-year old would be.

The interesting and scary thing is that this "child" is the most powerful nation in the world and is expected and needed to make important decisions that affect every other nation in the world.

I hate to admit but I didn't know the answer to one of those questions, but wow those people are just stupid!

Why don't they ever go to like the campus of Harvard or Stanford and try one of these things.

I don't think that Americans are any dumber or smarter than people in other countries but we(Americans) do need to work on our knowledge of the world.

Nice job in finding a handful of morons in a country of at least 300 million people. Every other country has morons like this too, it just looks worse for America since the country is so powerful.

I've lived in Europe, and these same people could have been found on the streets over there as well. So many human beings are only focused on their own lives, that simple trivia like this throws them into confusion.

Pretty much what I said but with less words

Yeah, just to reiterate it isn't a slam on Americans because just about every American I know has been good to me.

Ditto on that. Not to mention the aspect mentioned above. How many people did they ask that got those questions correct that they simply cut out of the footage? Who knows? Maybe they had 95 people get it right for every single one that got it wrong. String together a clip of the ones that got it wrong and ...voila - you got a clip that makes it look like everyone you asked questions of was completely stupid. So yeah basically, this is a funny little clip but completely meaningless.

But with all that being said I do agree that overall the general public are so self absorbed and don't give a crap about the rest of the world, both Americans and non-Americans, that it's not surprising. I have people like that in my own family, they wouldn't know who Tony Blair is or what the Axis of Evil is or where Iran is on a map. Not only do they not know, but they don't want to know. It's not simply about being stupid (because the people I know like this are not), although some people just are quite plainly stupid, it's also about their priorities. They don't feel a need to know so they don't know.

Funny stuff. I would love to know how many people they had questioned. Funny how they put a name on Australia and people realize that's the new country.

"I didn't know North Korea was that much bigger than South Korea."

On the real though, this is a slight testament for me to continue to read up on things. I'm not as aware of other countries but I'm curious. Situation has it where I can't go and do what I please like so many others with money. I don't go traveling. The least I can do is look up the information. There are dummies and geniuses around the world floating around in the average.
