    Buying a new notebook

My current notebook (compaq) is dying a very sloooooow and painful death. Am planning on buying a replacement in the next few days. However, my knowledge pertaining to such, is very limited. Would like to get away with spending $1K or less if possible. Any insight, opinions, or referrals would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is purchasing a computer on the internet a wise thing to do? Has anyone done so only to regret it later? And if you have/would, what sites would you suggest for doing so?

      Thanks in advance.
