Should I buy this Samsung 42" DLP for $759? Please help!

The Tv is a Samsung 42" DLP TV in 720P with 2500:1 ratio and it is HD ready.

The TV is an open box display tv at a "bog-box" retailer.

The Tv is a rear projection tv which means the bulb has been burning a lot and will go out w/ in the next 18 months, most likely.

But the protection plan on it is 4 years and cover bulbs and anything else that may go wrong with the tv over the next 4 years. They will sell the plan to me for half price b/c the tv was open bix display. $130 for the plan.

The tv model is a year old model and has been discontinued.

The tv is in good physical shape and has the original remote.

With tax and plan the Tv will be a total of $950 (covering me fully for 4 years).

    BUT....

They say that if I want to play PS3 games and watch Blue-Ray I should skip out on this deal and get a 1080p tv. They say w/out 1080p I will be kicking myself later on, no matter how good the 720p deal is.

Is it true that the PS3 requires 1080p to appreciate? Do I have to spend $1500 or more on a TV to appreciate the PS3? To appreciate blue-ray?

I am confused now b/c i was all set to buy this tv and ev'one says it's the best deal on earth...but as soon as I say "I'm getting a PS3 at Christmas" ev'one's opinion on the Samsung deal totally flips and they say "don't do it, get 1080p."

Right now all I have is a 20" sharp tv I bought in 1995 and I am tired of it. All I have right now is $1,000 to spare (towards a tv). Should I save my cash and get 1080p? Or for the same price of a 42" DLP 1080p tv, get the 720p tv AND a PS3.

    Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

i have that same tv. i got it for $799 during the Friday Thanksgiving sale at Circuit City. Besides a little gripe with the startup (seems like there's a little problem when i start my tv up in the morning. after that it's fine) everything else is top notch. we have a 61 inch rca downstairs and the quality of this samsung is much better.

At a normal viewing distance I don't think you can see any difference between 720p and 1080p on a 42" TV.

        affirmative

In order to notice a distinct difference between 720p & 1080p the TV has to be larger than 50" and you have to be sitting 7 feet or closer. Outside of that, you won't notice the difference as the difference is in the details. Besides, you won't get a 1080p for anywhere near the neighborhood of that.

Thanks Guys! I just picked it up:

$604 - Tv w/ Sony univeral remote (they lost samsung remote and manual)
$259 - 4 yr. protection plan covering bulb (and all else)
          $59 Tax
          $922 out the door

I'll tell you all how it runs later...

Thats a pretty good deal man. I hope everything goes well. That 4 yr protection play is great though, its nice knowing that you're covered incase anything happens to the Tv.

He shouldn't. I've been gaming on my 46" Samsung DLP for 2 years now and have never noticed any lag.

I have the 46' version as well and have no lag and love the TV overall. I would say to get it for sure.

I got the TV on black friday and it is great except for one little thing called "black grass". It is on all the Sammy 42" DLP's and when the screen is black, it looks like wavy grass is on the screen. It is only noticeable if you look for it; however, once you've seen it once, you start to notice it more. Otherwise, a great TV for the price.

No lag in any of the games (I only have PS2).

                            I've played:

                            The Show '07
                            King of Fighters 07 (3D)
                            NFS: Most Wanted
                            NFL 2k5
DOA 2: Hardcore (released in 2000)

One thing I noticed was that there was no apparent difference between playing with the tv's "Game Mode" turned ON or OFF. Anyone else notice a difference with Game Mode ON?

I also am playing with the PS2 cables that came out the box, and out of all the games I listed up there, The Show looks the worst....Anyone have suggestions for good, inexpensive components cables to hook PS2 to HDTV?

Also, any other suggestions for accessories (cables and such) to buy for this TV?

                            Thanks!
