Man diagnosed with terminal illness blows entire savings

    And then....

John Brandrick, from Newquay, Cornwall, was told he had pancreatic cancer two years ago after scans revealed a 7cm tumour.

The 62-year-old said he was told by doctors at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske that he only had a short time left to live.

So he quit his job and stopped paying his mortgage, instead splashing out on a lavish lifestyle of hotels, restaurants and holidays.

Then the hospital told him that he was actually suffering from non-fatal pancreatitis.

Mr Brandrick said that in the year he thought he was dying he spent everything and now he faces losing his house.
I guess that's one of those good news bad news situations. But anyway, he's now suing NHS for negligence as a result of the misdiagnosis. I wonder what he'll get from the courts....

Seems simple to me. Docs pay out of their nose, guy gets back on his feet.

I guess, but only because the hospital would be committing PR suicide if they threw a guy out on the street as a result of their misdiagnosis. If I were going to go out and blow everything I had, I'd at least want a second opinion....

He should just get his life savings back, seems pretty simple to me.

misdiagnoses happen from time to time it's why there's such a thing as a 2nd opinion. I dunno, it's pretty bad if the hospital doesn't pay some money back but the guy was a bit stupid to do all that.

Doesn't the guy have a family? You'd think they'd advise him not to blow every single cent he had just because he was dying.

He should have had a second diagnosis, he didn't, that is what I call contributory negligence. He has no one to blame but himself for not seeking a second opinion and making the decision to spend his entire life savings. He should get nothing.

He should get something back. Being diagnosed that you are going to die soon but then come back and say whoops, we messed up.

Should he had another opinion? Hell yeah he should have but is it required?

I'm sure that happens alot...this guy was just lucky enough to be so stupid, that his story got the attention of a news outlet. So even if he loses, he'll find some organization dying to give him money for the goodwill PR.

Plus his mortgage company won't want to take the PR hit to actually foreclose.

Yeah that's true. Don't get me wrong, the guy is an idiot and I'm not saying give all of his assets back but he should get something.

maybe he spent his savings because his judgement was clouded due to the stress of his inevitable demise.

                        OR

he had a 2nd opinion and he knew he was not dieing and figured that he'd get some form of kickback for the hospital's mistake so he says "why not, let's have some fun." while his 2nd opinion physician is in on it.

                        hey, it could happen.

guess the guy has never heard of a second opinion.

He should of gotten a second opinion, no doubt, but especially if he doesn't have much/any family/friends who knows what mental state you could go into. Either way, the fact is that the hospital for mis-diagnosing him, is still partially responsible. IMO.
