Does anyone here have one? Would the beam in a basement support it? Do you need boxing gloves to use one (like, will it ruin my hands if I do have one)? Will it help me lose weight (ie, my arms, endurance, possibly abs)? Ive never seen one for sale, how much do they go for and where can I buy one?

Heavy Punching Bag
So Im thinking of buying one and putting it in my basement. Basically Im doing it for fun. Ive never boxed, nor do I watch much boxing, but I think it would be fun. Instead of playing boxing video games, I can entertain myself with one--and at the same time, get some exercise.

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
You can buy a pretty good heavy bag for around $200 or so. If the beam in the basement isn't sturdy enough, they also have the structures/stands to hold them, a speed bag, and other boxing equipment.
Definitely get some bag gloves too.. if you don't, you'll regret it. You may find out you enjoy it.. but make sure that you watch some videos, or even go to a local gym to find out the correct form, etc... if not, it's useless.
Go in intervals of 3 minutes.. there are plenty of workouts you can do as well.

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
I had a free standing one years ago just before I moved out of my parent's house. Here is a pic if you don't know what i'm referring to:
They didn't want me bolting it into a basement beam since they are known to make a LOT of noise. It worked pretty good, although it did slide around a bit when hitting it. Wasn't a problem however since I would just "float like a butterfly" all around the thing to keep it basically in the same place and give my legs a workout as well. It came with a pair of light gloves, and my hands got REALLY torn apart after a few intense sessions. I bought some regular gloves and never had a problem again.
Definitely a really good workout... a few rounds with one of these and I was wiped out! Also very handy to get out frustration when one of your favorite sports teams loses. :wink:LET'S GO FLYERS, YANKEES, DOLPHINS!!!Comment

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
You dont need to spend $200 on a bag. A good one? Ya, they probably cost that much. But you can go to D.icks's and get an Everlast bag for under 100... I used to work there, so I know. I think if you're just planning on screwing around with a bag, there is no point in spending $200 on something you aren't sure you'll even use much, IMO.
Some of those should be in stores, but that gives you an idea of what you can get and what you can spend.
Personally, I'd go with one of the 80 or 100 lb bags... unless you're a puney wimp... jk.
And DEFINATELY get some bag gloves. Not only will a bag tear up your hands, but you risk wrist and arm injury.
(edit: wow, i cant write d.icks... lol)Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
Haha... yeah, if you aren't serious about getting into boxing, go w/ a cheaper bag. If you like it, and want to get serious about it... then look into the better bags. Good advice bgeno.
As for the gloves, I use the gloves I wear when kickboxing... w/ the gel filled knuckles. When I buy a new pair for kickboxing, I retire the old pair to become bag gloves, haha. Everlast makes some good ones for around $20.
And like bgeno said, Definitely go for at least an 80lb bag.Twitter - WTF_OS

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
I didn't have this exact model, but you're right... in this picture it looks like that would happen! I didn't have any such issues with mine, so it must have had a smaller base and/or larger bag to hit.LET'S GO FLYERS, YANKEES, DOLPHINS!!!Comment

Re: Heavy Punching Bag
Most of the time, you aren't going to be close enough to the bag where you're feet will hit it anyway. I had one of the freestanding ones that looked like an actual guy... that was pretty fun. Beating the hell out of Bob was a good workout. They actually have arms on Bob now, so you don't have to feel bad about beating up a guy w/ no arms. He still doesn't have legs, but he could punch back if he wanted to now at least, lol.Twitter - WTF_OS
