    Letters from Iwo Jima

Just got done watching it. Highly recommend it. Ken Watanabe is fast becoming one of my favorite actors.

On a side note...I just realized that the last 3 movies I've watched have all been in languages other than English. Weird and quite unintentional.

Pan's Labyrinth-Spanish (Two thumbs up! Very good flick)
The Original Japanese Version of The Grudge
    Letters from Iwo Jima

As a result...I now communicate only in subtitles.

I found it very hard to get immersed in Pans Labyrinth and to a lesser extent Letters. However I didn't mind the subtitles at all in Apocalypto. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. One of the greatest films in our time IMO and will one day be considered a classic.

I'm going to go pick Letters up tomorrow. I really enjoyed Flags of Our Fathers. I'm an all around WWII buff.
There is no place like Nebraska
        Dear old Nebraska U.
Where the girls are the fairest,
        The boys are the squarest,
Of any old school that I knew.
There is no place like Nebraska,
        Where they're all true blue.
        We'll all stick together,
        In all kinds of weather,
        For Dear old Nebraska U!

Same here. I read the book for Flag of our Fathers right after it was published. Great read, and the movie was very well done. Can't wait to see Letters.

If you've read Flags of our Fathers, or if not and enjoy reading about WWII, check out Bradley's other book, Flyboys, about pilots who were shot down around the Japanese island of Chichi Jima. One of this pilots was George H. W. Bush, he was one of the few that were rescued by Americans, and not captured by the Japanese and beheaded.

I have been a Hong kong and other asian film fan for about a decade. It does take time to try to absorb and understand subtitled films. Most of the world is used to watching subtitled hollywood films. of course here in the USA we are not. I do think subtitled films get a bad rap for this though.

I started Apocalypto last night. Looking forward to finishing it up at some point this weekend. I liked "Flags..." a lot, look forward to seeing this one too. I like Watanabe as well.

Just watched Apocalypto the other night. I was pissed about the subtitles at first, but quickly forgot about them as the movie was very good. Bloody as hell. Was a nice departure from the normal Hollywood remake/sequel machine.

Yepp...read it. I thougt it was just about as good as Flags of Our Fathers. Do you know if Bradley is writing anymore books?

I just got Flags of our Fathers and LFIJ in HD. I'm about to watch one them, which would you watch first for those who saw both of them? I really want to test out my new surround sound too, so i'm pretty sure any of these war flicks will do a good job.

Technically there isn't any order as they happen at the same time so I don't think it would really matter.

Just finally saw Letters this evening. I thought it was a pretty good flick, but I could have endured a little more of the battle for Iwo.

Watch flags of our fathers, because both movies share some of the same scenes. It's actually pretty awesome that they did it this way and made a movie for both an American and Japanese perspective.

It's very interesting learning the different cultures of the war. For example America sends out their soldiers hoping that they come back alive. Though they are risking their lives, Japanese soldiers were sent to Imo Jima knowing they were going to die and not come back. Pretty hardcore if you ask me.

I was a little drunk today watch the movie so I didn't follow it as much I would like to. Did they end showing all 35 days of the Battle of Iwo Jima? It seemed like they only showed a week of the battle but it seemed like everything ended after 5 days.

I've already seen Flags of Our Fathers and it was a pretty good movie. I think that if Letters and Flags of Our Fathers were combined with some of the other stuff cut out, it would have made one great movie.

Watching Letters, I can't believe Clint directed these movies back to back. Letters is such a superior movie and along with Downfall and Das Boot is the best war movie I have ever seen.

While Flags was a jumbled, incoherent mess trying to do too much with some really bad performances (Adam Beach was Razzie worthy and Phillipe wasn't far behind), Letters was subtle, heart wrenching without being sappy, and flashbacks were kept to a minimum in all the right places while also having superior battle sequences. The fact that the lead actors were much better than Flags also helped as they were powereful performances yet understated. Finding the Japanese side of the battle more interesting also helped as I've always been fascinated with the Japanese willingness to die for thier country's honor.

This movie is a definate classic and Clint should have won a Oscar for this rather than flawed pictures like Million Dollar Baby.
