    Dell cutting 8000 jobs...

Another reason why people are disenchanted with business in America.

Dell's Net income last year was $683 Million last year. Yes it was down from 1.2 Billion but instead of improving customer service and figuring out a way to compete they cut 8000 jobs to get there stock to go up.

They still made a profit of $683 million!! And I can guarantee you that they won't expect less work done, it will be shifted to other people who won't make any more money, will have to stay late, will feel like they can't take time off because when they get back the work will pile up and they'll be more stressed than before they left. This country sucks for vacations to begin with and i know lots of people who just don't take time off because it's worse when they get back then when they left.

I know some people will argue this is the way business is done but i think it sucks. At what point does excess profit equal corporate greed. If you look at it this is 8000 people who will be out of work. People with families and homes . I realize if these people average a cost of $100,000 to employ that's $800 million dollars and Dell makes more that 2005 but people should be more important than money especailly when you still made $683 million in profit. I could see if they were losing money or just getting over the break even point but jeez.

I guess I could never be a CEO of big company but I just hate hearing the same thing over and over. These companies expect profits to keep rising and rising so stock stays high. When is a company ever happy. I know, if your not moving ahead your moving back blah, blah, blah.

My boss and I were talking about this awhile ago. There has to be a point where you saturate your market and are going to level off. So many companies in my opinion have come and gone because they hit the saturation point and try to figure out how to keep the bottom line up instead of focusing on keeping there base cleintelle happy and content and staying with them. The people who have gone with them are forgetten so they can go after the people who aren't with them. They spend tons of money to get those people and those people don't switch because they are happy where they are. Sorry for the ramble there.

I am sorry but I dislike the way business is heading where employess are nothing but discardable pieces of nothing who they think can easily be replaced.

It comes down to one word. Greed.

I am sure some people will disagree with me and that is fine but everytime I see this it makes my blood boil and I had to vent somewhere. Since this is the only message baord I am on what better place. Thanks.

I'm not surprise because i believe Dell is one of the top company's for outsourcing their work.

Its a shame and i feel sorry for those families but i'm not surprised coming from dell.

Dell has slipped to # 2 in the computer market for the past two years to HP. This is what competition is all about. Dell didn't reduce their work force by 20% or 50%, just 10%. They will still have 80,000 employees worldwide, which is a heckuva lot of employees.

They are also streamlining their computers to Wal-Mart starting today. Dell made profits after the first quarter, which was a surprise to the analysts.

It will be interesting to keep track of how the new CEO fares down the road.

This is a good article to read on their upcoming strategy and why they had a 10% reduction.

Oh believe me I am not surprised by it. I am just sick of hearing about companies making huge profits and still cutting jobs because the profits aren't enough. Because they are greedy and don't care about the people who work for them.

Outsourcing Customer Service in my opinion to other countries is awful to me. Not only because the jobs that are lost but in the long run i think it would hurt your business. I look at it this way. Most people who call Customer Service are all ready frustrated. Add in that if you can't communicate well with the person trying to solve your problem your just going to get more fed up and the next time maybe you'll think twice about getting that product.

But am I surprised, not at all. Just tired of the same corporate greed.

          roadman,

I realize that this is how business works and it's great for here bottom line and everything.

They made a profit of over 1 billion dollars in 2005. $684 in 2006.

It's easy to look at the numbers and say well it's only 10% of the workforce. And that there stock rose 7% or whatever after the announcement.

But the numbers of people getting let go are real people. They are treated as if they are nothing. Employee#12344556 had to be let go because some higher up made bad business decisions and they've lost market share to HP.

Like I said I realize that this is how business works. I just don't like it. Regualr people are takenf for granted and forgotten because of the almighty dollar.

Oh, I understand how you feel, I've had a Dell now for over 6 months and they haven't disappointed me in customer service, yet. I've talked to CS, and a technician over the phone and I had no problems with communication. I've also ordered Vista from Dell a few days before the deadline of March 31st and just received the order a few weeks ago.

Maybe they are improving or maybe I've been lucky.

I'm not saying I like it either, but this is the way it's been since WW2. It's a pendulum that swings back and forth over time. The country is good, loyalty is good and unemployment is low. The country hits a recession, loyalty is lower and unemployment is high.

It's not just Dell, either and I know you know that. My dad and father in law worked 30 years with the same company. It's very rare you will see any of that from here on out. Loyalty cuts and slices both ways.

Companies are looking at the bottom line and employers are looking out for themselves.

did you not read the entire article yesterday that said the SEC is investigating them for improper accounting practices. I think there was a reason for the layoffs. Dell has been making crap computers lately.

I actually only read the article this morning that I saw on MSN.

So no I wasn't even aware of the whole SEC thing.

                        Capitalism says Hi!

CEO's don't give a crap about Employee Joe Six Pack and Suzie Smith. They care about how happy their shareholders are. While it would be great for employers to be more loyal, it should work the other way too. Unless you've signed a contract, you can bolt for a better job anytime you want.

The days of working 40+ years in the same company are long gone. I'm not a fan of outsourcing (When I called Microsoft I could barely understand what the Indian guy was saying) but I understand why companies do it. More and more companies are outsourcing to India. I read an article in Time Magazine that said more and more new College grads are moving to India because that's where the jobs are.

As for Dell, they have improved their customer service. I called last week because I had a problem with my laptop/router. When I called D-Link, the technician was rude. When I called Dell, he solved my problem and was very friendly. He said I might be recieving a survey rating the service and he asked me if it was okay for him to mark down I was satisfied in his report. When I called several months ago, this didn't happen.
