Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

Damn...it's gonna be that much easier for thugs to plan out their routes for drive byes!

Anyway, I think that the feature is pretty cool, and I can't wait until they get my area in street view.

By the way, in the demo they were able to zoom so close that you could read a parking sign. I'm finding that I'm not able to see anything legible, not even stores signs or billboards.Comment

Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

I don't understand how someone can not care about the fact that there could potentially be cameras that can zoom in so much that they could read a parking sign. Maybe I am being paraniod but I don't like the idea of having cameras around me everywhere I turn, in places that I can't even see.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Yeah, because I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Google Earth is a privately owned commercial company that isn't funded by the federal government. It uses images acquired from commercial satellites and other non-government assets.

Keep believing what you want though if it is going to give you a reason to keep being paranoid.Comment

Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

It was just a vehicle driven around with a camera on top of it taking pictures, it's not like it is a hidden camera. I don't see this as a big deal at all, just a cool advancement of technology.I don't understand how someone can not care about the fact that there could potentially be cameras that can zoom in so much that they could read a parking sign. Ok, I'm not that serious on this, alrighty? Wow.Yeah, because I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I admit, though...it made me think when I saw this on tv yesterday. It's not like I loaded up the bunker with canned foods, bottled water and all the porn I would need.Comment

Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

Quite honestly, here's the real deal:

How comfortable does it make you feel to know that all of this information is readily available for purchase to anyone? Not just the U.S. Government, but foreign governments and individuals (Al Qaida). In fact, Google Earth was used in the planning stages of a terrorist attack to blow up JFK International Airport that was recently thrwarted.

So the bigger question is are you comfortable with the Federal Government monitoring who purchases the same imagery used by Google Earth (GeoEye) and other commercial imaging companies?Comment

Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

I wasn't trying to single you out P2K. My posts were directed at anyone who made posts eluding to the fact that the government has anything to do with this (including the original post).

I'm just trying to educate and inform so as to not give the general public another reason to spread erroneous misinformation about the federal goverment.Comment

Re: Google Maps: Street View - Big brother gets a little closer...

It's awful that people are in the world looking for means to hurt others, and that they will use tools meant for something totally different for their agenda. I would love for a street view of the area of the country I live. It would help a lot when trying to locate areas. I would not want to see people living in fear and that fear stunting technology and the development and creativity in using it.Quite honestly, here's the real deal:

And yes I am comfortable with the government monitoring this imagery, because just like you said, there might be other governments and individuals monitoring it as well.
