My cell phone can basically do everything the iphone can do, so I don't see the big deal at all. My phone was free and is just a phone. I can view the web, I can listen to MP3's, I can text message, I can listen to my voice mail, take pictures, etc.

I can see what you're saying, and I think the iPhone would be great and fun to own... I just can't justify buying one when I already have a 30GB iPod and a cell phone that surfs the web, texts, takes pictures, etc.

I understand...just personally not worth up to the 3k they require from you. 600 for a phone, maybe 100 bucks a month when you factor in extra minutes over their cheaper 60 buck one, then the required 2 year contract which is crap (you should only have to sign a contract when getting a deal on a phone IMO).

I would love the iPhone, I love gadgets like that, but it's too expensive for me, especially when it's on the first generation. You know in 3 months they'll release a "must have" iPhone v2 that has a bigger hard drive, more battery, more features, etc. It happens all the time, the early adopters always get screwed, but that's the con of being an early adopter.

How long til other companies release their "Iphone"? I can only imagine the price will be cheaper and probably have more service options.

You mean like when they all scrambled to make an iPod?

These companies will try to come close but still fail miserably in the usability area. Also there are technologies patented like multi-touch and probably the proximity detector, auto brightness, and whatever name the feature is called when you rotate the screen. Steve Jobs mentioned, a year ago when the iPhone was announced, that it was patented like crazy.

I can only see phone manufacturers having a chance only if they make the phone AND software.

Cingular had the Razr exclusively first. I don't think all the other companies are going to wait the rumored 5 years for an iPhone. I can guess someone will buy out the contract, or apple will get their act together and realize they can maximize profits by widening their audience.

Bingo. If the iPhone does very well with AT&T, other companies will jump at the chance at getting it, as well.

Problem with this is the demands Apple have with the iPhone. Remember Verizon turned down the iPhone. Jobs wanted "Apple control" on this product and the only one that let Apple do that was ATT. Whether you like Jobs and Apple one thing that you can't criticize Apple for is quality. The iPhone is no different. On top of that, I'm sure there's things in the contract that are tied to voice quality and customer service.

the problem was the sheer lack of knowledge by the reps. They knew nothing. One rep would say one thing, then transfer me to someone who would say something completely different. If they would have just told me what was the problem ilup front, I would have been ok. My problem is that everyone sounded clueless and totally unprepared

I think they were caught here. LIke I said, most of the problems were with people porting their numbers. I have a feeling the other carriers slowed down the process just to put a sour taste in new iphone/att users.

Im sorry, but I had to respond because I NEVER understand this line of thinking/rationale, hat early adopters get "screwed".

What makes technology great is that it is always moving forward, always innovating, and always dropping in price so that things can become more wide spread. Could you imagine if standard DVD players were still $1000?

Now, whenever anybody buys anything, they should be absolutely sure that whatever features/specs/etc are provided are enough for the purchase price they are paying. For example if you pay $600 for an iPhone right NOW, you are determining that what it offers NOW is worth $600 dollars to you. The thing about this decision is that it is independent. No matter what comes out later, you are getting what you deemed "worth it", and you got to have and use it earlier than anyone picking up a "version 2". How in the hell does that equate to "getting screwed"?

And what's the alternative?!?!?!? Companies stop developing products because they want to make sure Joe Blow isn't insecure about not having the "latest and greatest"?

You have selective memory. Jobs has had flops but not recently. The newton was kind of like the PS3. Great device far but too expansive. I think the failure of the Newton and the success of the iPod has taught Apple much.

Apple gets all the press about its products but Apple products are doing things that the market leaders are failing to do.

Vista is essentially a Mac OS clone.
Who has knocked off the iPod?
Mac OS is a very stable and reliable OS and it works with.
Name an electronics company that is offering products with the same type of quality and support as Apple.

I'm not saying apple is perfect but they seem to be offering products that the public wants and then supports those products.

Apple and jobs has single-handedly transformed the computer industry. The mac, the newton (which led to the PDA), iPod, and now the iPhone. That is a track record Bill Gates, Sony and others don't have. That's not to say they will be successful but they seem to deliver products that make our world easier.

I know, I was just saying that a lot of people have a selective memory the other way, thinking Apple can do no wrong. Lisa and Next (I think that was just Jobs) are two examples. Look at the PS3, Sony got a little cocky and thought they could push it at this price point. I never anticipated the PS3 performing as it is, honestly. Just saying that Apple and Jobs aren't infallible. The iPod and iPhone, along with their new strategy with Macs have all been great, so I don't anticipate anything bad.

Ouch... sorry bro, but as much as I love Apple, that's where I draw the line. Their iPod line does not get "truly" supported. You rarely ever see any development on older units once the next "big" thing is released. A nice example is the older, 5th gen. video iPods could have easily had a firmware upgrade to include the scroll by letter feature in the 5.5 gen. video iPod... and it never happened.

Just a nice way to add to the bullet list of "new" features in your "upgraded" ipod.

You rarely ever see any development on older units once the next "big" thing is released. Sorry but this is a business not freebie junction. Apple offers a better product through releasing new products and the rest of the world. How the hell is the ipod 1st g going to support video playback.

Apple isn't a non-profit. Sure I wish companies would give us stuff for free but they don't. Did a company come in and give you an oven when yours was 5 years old. Did Samsung recall your analog TV when 1080i TVs made their way onto the market. No, you are critical for Apple for something that no other company does. Like any other company their improve by offering models for sale.

I don't know any companies that improve their products after they are sold unless there are serious health risks or broken.
