    Re: iPhone Discussion Thread

It is widely expected that Apple will refresh its iPhone line-up later this year with the introduction of the iPhone 5S. We aren’t expecting much of a change between the iPhone 5 and 5S in terms of how it looks. That’s based on the fact Apple doesn’t seem to be investing much at the moment in new production equipment, meaning not much in the way of new hardware features. With that being the case, Apple will be focused on upgrading the components inside the handset.

The image you see above is thought to be a leaked shot of the motherboard that will ship inside the iPhone 5S. As usual, this has come from an unknown source that website iOSDoc trusts along with a few details of what we can expect with the refresh in terms of software updates.

Apparently, that A7 processor you see in the image is a quad-core chip that will be clocked at 1.2GHz. Although the A6 inside the iPhone 5 runs slightly faster at 1.3GHz, it’s only a dual-core chip so the A7 should offer noticeable performance gains and allow the smartphone to just do more. The GPU is expected to be switched out for the quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4, which is used in the 4th-gen iPad. There’s also expected to be 2GB of dual-channel LPDDR2-1066 RAM on board instead of the 1GB the iPhone 5 currently uses. Again, that should allow more headroom for the software and apps you want to run on the phone.

With new hardware also comes some software updates and usually a few surprises from Apple. The introduction of the iPhone 5S is expected to include iOS 7 rolled out alongside an updated version of Siri.

All that new hardware means there’s bound to be significantly more draw on the battery. Apple will have to counter that either with a more aggressive battery management system, or by managing to squeeze a larger battery inside the case.

I was waiting for that last paragraph. Huge reason why I've stuck w/ the 4 is battery life.

Man I am loving the speeds of the LTE on this iPhone 5. I jailbroke mine as soon as I got it and currently my internet is down so using MyWi to tether my Macbook Pro and I'm getting DL speeds just a tiny bit slower than my ISP and uploads are much faster. Here are my test results.

What are the pros and cons of jailbreaking an iPhone? I still have the 4s (had it since launch day) and have never bothered to jailbreak it. Basically, I want to know what I can do with my phone after it is jailbroken that I cannot do with it already? Any help would be appreciated.

Here are some of the things it's useful for.

Jailbreaking means bypassing the restrictions Apple puts on the operating system and taking full control of the device. With a jailbroken device, you can install apps and tweaks that aren't authorized by Apple.

You can install apps that aren't available from the iTunes App Store. For example, Cydia is a framework that lets you add other unauthorized apps, such as games and networking apps.

              Free tethering
Ever wanted to use your iPhone or cellular-enabled iPad as a broadband modem to connect your laptop to the Internet?
AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint offer this service, called "tethering," but charge a lot for it. Owners of jailbroken devices can do it for free, thanks to unauthorized apps such as MyWi, available through Cydia.

              More customization options
If you want to alter your iPhone's or iPad's look and feel, there are plenty of themes available on Cydia to change your icons, wallpaper, dock.

Access to the iOS file system
Jailbreaking exposes the inner workings of an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to its user, which can be very useful.

For example, installing a secure shell (SSH) client lets you securely move data between two devices on a network. Using SSH, you can connect your jailbroken iPhone to your computer and fix corrupted files, or install games that aren't available in the iTunes App Store.

some tweaks these work for the 4S as well

I use my iPad every day at school, and I have an iPhone. I got the iPad as a Christmas gift and didn't know how much I'd like it, and now I'm on it all the time. I love it.

i've really toned it down with the number of tweaks i use for two reasons. 1) i just got used to it after 6+ months of stock iOS 6. and 2) when you hear horror stories about slow/glitchy Jailbreak phones, it's usually because they've got too many apps/tweaks installed. keep it simple.

NCsettings or SBsettings (free) for quick access to wifi, BT, flash on/off toggles
FakeCarrier (text) or Zeppelin (icons) (free) to replace your carrier's name in the status bar
BiteSMS (not free, 14 day trial) replaces the stock SMS app. lets you reply/compose without leaving the app you are in. adds contact photos to app.

i've heard really good things about Auxo and Zeypher. i have not tried them yet. they are task switcher/task manager apps. i believe neither of them is free.

Here is a screen shot of my iPhone 5 just to show how useful Springtomize is. You can adjust the size of the phones icons how many icons you want on the dock its just a really good app to have.
