I've been listening to this album this past week and some very good stuff. It's like the Stripes of old.Comment

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
Icky Thump........ Never heard anything by this group before this. Then, I.T. comes on the radio from nowhere-boom!!!-I gotta have this, even if the rest of the C.D. tanks royal. Jack White is a talent that(to me) likes to show snippets of his amazing guitar pyrotechnics at the perfect moments. Very logical standard power and blues progressions with "genius at work" guitar fills and hooks that can make any guitar player say"wait a minute,I need to hear that whole run again!" Well, maybe not everyone, but I sure did!
I have nothing to compare it with by them-so,here's my take of this C.D>-maybe touches of Led Zeppelin-Queen-Primus-even a little of System of a Down in the most bizarre extreme of all the previous mentioned. There is also other elements that make them what they are, that defy definition. Originality is found throughout this nearly 49 minute adventure.
Bottom line:Listening to this C.D. reminds of my first beer when I was 16 years old. different-weird-wonderful and look forward to the next one. O.k.-gotta go listen to "catch hell blues" and "little cream soda" again.................Last edited by coffeeholic; 06-28-2007, 01:11 AM.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Coffee, definitely pick up the rest of their albums, especially their self-titled debut.

I think I will, my wife and I are going to be moving back east in mid July and I'm going to need to get some more CD's for the 2000 mile plus trip ahead of us. I really am enjoying this CD-good stuff-and thanks for suggesting the self titled one as a start.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
Comment for Fresh Tendrils...I'm listening to "you don't know what love is" and for some reason,it reminds me of a song the band Queen would have done(another one of my alltime favorite bands) I know you had a different impression of that one. That's pretty good how even one song can take everyone down a different road, musically speaking. One more thing, the song "conquest" could have easily been a new one by Primus. I should start a thread on them, that is one band I never got tired of. Add on Edit: These comparisons are not to be taken as me implying that The White Stripes are a copycat band-because IMO they are not. Their music runs it's own course well and the compares are basically for anyone thinking about maybe getting this CD that hasn't heard anything from it yet and likes the bands I compared them to.Last edited by coffeeholic; 06-28-2007, 08:17 PM.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
I love the Stripes but The Black Keys are now my favorite band. I just went to their show in Detroit tuesday and it was incredible. Alot of energy and kick *** music. I love simple two people bands like them, just raw bluesy garage like rock.Lives and Dies With:

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
The Black Keys have two great albums, but The White Stripes have five. I really wanted Magic Potion to be great, but it was ranged from just being okay to being good. The Black Keys are definitely a band I want to see live and one of my favorite bands that still make music.

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
I too appreciate raw bluesy garage like rock. Never heard of the Black Keys though. Might have to look into that. Could you tell me more about them or start a thread regarding their music? hey Fresh Tendrils, you got a take on these guys? Add on: You already answered as I was typing this out-thanks FT.Last edited by coffeeholic; 06-28-2007, 09:05 PM.ByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
There should be a thread about the Black Keys as I started one a year or two ago wondering about them. Look into Thickfreakness and Rubber Factory for them. Their Chulahoma EP is really good as well - all the songs are covers of Junior Kimbrough.
If you're looking for something more folksy and acoustic, check out Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's "Howl." Its one of my favorite albums of recent years. I'm not big on their electric sound, but "Howl" is amazing.

I do like the "garage sound" as you know by now-Kyuss and Stripes is a good ground zero sound to work off of for me. If you can think of others I'd like, throw em' my way-either here, new thread or P.M. thanks againByurrulzIdon'tfollowComment

Re: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
I agree about The Black Keys magic Potion. I like it but not as much as I like the others. However My favorite albums of theirs is the first "The Big Come Up" and "Thickfreakness" with "Thickfreakness" being my favorite. Another good band to check out would be the Greenhornes.
