What makes up a Street Block?

Ok this might sound stupid but i got into an argument with my sister as of what makes up a block. And we've been on this convo for a good hour now. If you think its stupid and don't have some good insight please refain from posting then.

Ok i ask what makes up a block. A street block. She just asked me, If i'm on Team Street and i cross the street (still on Team Street) would i be on a different block because this side of Team Steet is connected to a different series of streets then the other side of Team Street..........makes sense?

She insist it has to be four streets that make up a block. I kind of agree with it, but when people say i'm going to run the block or going around the block, they're normally talking about one street length. Cause when i think of a block, i think of a street. I mean for example if on Daniel street and Daniel is this long street with streets that intersect with it, if i cross one of those streets, i've crossed a block havn't I? So me running on one lane through streets is considered a block right? And i guess running in a sqaure is also considered a block if she runs four streets all intersecting right?

    Any insights?

      Awesome avatar Matrix.

I've always thought a "block" was composed of four streets (like a square), one street on each side. So yes, one street can be part of two blocks.

Well here in NYC....where your "block" meant everything when you were a kid...it was both sides of the street from one intersection to the other. NOT around the corner. Once you went onto the Avenue, it was a different block.
Block wars back in the 60's and 70's was a blast(as long as they didn't get violent...but what are you going to do?)

Say the square that made up the connecting streets are 45 Street.....10th Avenue.......46 Street and 9th Avenue. That's four different blocks.

Thats what i always thought. But my sister made it seem like:

thought a "block" was composed of four streets (like a square), one street on each side. So yes, one street can be part of two blocks.
Which also makes sense somewhat. I just remember saying i'm gona run the block and just run to the end of my street and back, never really thought of it as running around my "block."

          Thanks ways guys

I always use the term block to refer to one side of the street from one intersection to another.
