Re: Ipod or Zune?
I was looking for an opinion on which product is better and why. As far as purchasing music I do not have a clue as to what you are stating it's a no-brainer. I'm new to this DL music and all. Just want to make a smart buy and not regret it 6 mos. down the road because it is now obselete. Peace!!!!Comment

They've recently started offering unprotected music, but its .30 more per song, and isnt anywhere near 100% of the catalog.
So if you buy music off iTunes, then its really not a discussion... iPod all the way.
Plus I dont know anyone who owns a zune, while I think I am the only person I know who doesnt have an iPod... (which changes Friday when I get my iPhone)

Re: Ipod or Zune?
JSKYWALKER, I own a Zune and at two times in the last few years I have owned a 3G and 5G iPod. I think where the one has its weaknesses, the other makes up for in the strengths dept. and vice versa. Me personally, I really like the Zune hardware better than the iPod. It just looks a lot cleaner as opposed to the iPod look imo. I was getting tired that Apple hadn't done much in revising the iPod the last few years due to no real competition. Speaking of the hardware, I really like the navigation better on the Zune as opposed to the iPod. Finding my music is much easier imo with the Zune.
One of the weaknesses that I find with the Zune is the software itself. There are a few things that really needs to be fixed imo. I'm hoping that with a future revision or the Zune's coming in the Fall they will have fixed that stuff. This is one area where the iPod wins with itunes, they have refined that software to perfection as I remember their first few versions of itunes were just as bad as the Zune software. This is understandable to a degree with MS, but they should have learned from their competitor's mistakes.
Also I had to get MS technical support involved to get the Zune running fine on MS VISTA. But don't let something like that stop you from enjoying this thing.
You do get a larger screen with the Zune as opposed to the iPod which makes a big difference imo. I have uploaded videos on this thing to watch, such as movies nad even narrated power point presentations that we build at work to test on here and they looked good.
I don't like the battery life with the Zune, that is something else that I think could be improved upon with a future revision.
One last problem, I'm down to about 4GB on the Zune. With the new iPod and Zune releasing in the Fall, I really look forward to a 60-80GB model of either one. At that point I'll use my PRP plan on the Zune to put towards one of the larger Zune's or iPod. I am hoping that MS does release a larger Zune + fix the software and I'm game for a new one.

Here are some pics of my Zune, please excuse the blur as my son kept on pushing me arm as I was taking the pictures.
Good luck, if you have any questions let me know. Hopefully some iPod people or others with Zunes could chime in to help you out. One last thing, I recommend going to Best Buy, Circuit City, or whichever stores have this in your area and play around with both.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 06-24-2007, 07:00 PM.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
I was reading the same thing, its supposed to release this Fall and its their biggest upgrade to the iPod since them going from the Photo iPod to the Video iPod. I wonder how much this one will cost or if it will be the same cost as the current ones out there.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
I have to think you would see a price drop on their top models, and this new one would take over that top price point.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
Do you really think that they will sell it at $249? I can see them trying to give it a $50 price hike due to the nature of the touch technology, but you never know. The DS Lite is at $129, so a $249 price could be workable.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
Yup, Circuit City has the Zune for $199 this week and Best Buy is selling it at $129 if you order high speed internet from one of the providers that they are working with.

I agree. These these things really need to start leveling off price wise pretty soon.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
Is the Zune price drop related to the iPhone being released this week?
I'm an ipod fan but not for the obvious reasons. I had a non-ipod last year and it wasn't worth the hassle. I did my homework and got the best non-ipod for the price I wanted to pay. Why I like the ipod and Apple is they work. Ya ya that's their slogan but there's no denying that they simply work.
While the machine I had was okay and simple enough to use, windows media was not. It wasn't as easy as iTunes.
Apple products are more pricey but for me personally I don't want to fight with a machine. I want to put music on my machine and go. Itunes let's you do that.
You need to ask yourself what you want in a music player.
1) Do you want it to be small so you exercise and run with it?
2) Do you want it to hold a large music library?
3) Do you need FM radio?
4) Do you want to watch video?
5) How much do you want to pay?
Start off with those and the board will be able to help you out.Comment

Did the Zune ever get a PlayForSure Firmware upgrade? If not, I'd never touch the thing.Comment

Re: Ipod or Zune?
I agree with JRod. I've been through four different players - a small capacity iRiver, a medium capacity Philips, a large capacity Creative, and now a 2GB iPod Nano. I liked the price and the actual hardware of the iRiver and the Creative (stay away from Philips), but Windows Media was so clunky, I couldn't handle it. iTunes works much better. There are also many more accessories available for iPods. If you have the cash, I recommend the iPod.Comment
