    DirecTV Questions...

I'm moving to my new place a week from Sunday and I'm looking into getting DirecTV instead of Comcast. I know there are quite a few DTV buffs here so this should be painless!

    - Are there any contracts or can I leave whenever I want? Early termination fees? Anything of that nature? If this thing doesn't live up to my standards I don't want to be stuck with it.

    - Would you say there is any downside to DTV besides 'losing the signal during thunderstorm' episodes?

    - Do the HD channels actually look as good as cable, like many people claim?

    - The HD-DVR must be bought in addition, correct? $200 up front for a HD-DVR vs $9 a month with Comcast is a pretty big hike in price. I guess in the long run it may save money, but how long should the HD-DVR last that I purchase from DTV? Plus, if I decide to leave DTV I'm screwed because I bought this thing.

    - I was at a party recently where the guy had DTV and I was playing around with it for a few minutes, it seemed like the guide was very slow and unresponsive compared to cable. Is this the case w. all DTV sets?

    - How exactly does the "pick the channels you want" work? I want to make sure I can get YES and MSG in HD (without buying some huge package), plus my local channels. Do these cost extra?

    - Similarly, how do premium channels work? The only one I really want is HBO, according to their website it looks like they're all packaged together (Cinemax, Showtime, etc).

    - How's the pricing? When I look at everything on their site it seems like it's going to be quite a bit more expensive than Comcast - maybe I blow at math.

    - Anything else I should know about? Suggestions, etc?

    Thanks fellas!

    Re: DirecTV Questions...

I'll don't have time to answer all the questions, but if you go to http://www.dbstalk.com/ you can find all the answers there. Y

ou can stay out of a contract, but you have to pay full price for the equipment.

$200 is a base price for the HR20 (HD-DVR), but you can call and talk to them and you shouldn't have to pay more than $99 including install.

And you do not own the boxes, you are leasing them, so if you leave or it breaks you send it back.

he guide is a lot faster now and you can turn off the animations that make it slow.

For YES and MSG in HD, you have to be in the New York DMA, basically local broadcasting area for those stations.
