Re: When did ESPN jump the shark?

When Disney bought them...became too much about entertainment and not enough about just sports. The brief two line sports overlays during Sportscenter just don't cut it. I miss the old days when there was a whole screen dedicated to the stats (like they still have on Baseball Tonight).

I like the anchors, I don't mind them trying to be funny, but I hate how they don't even care about the games anymore. It's just 20 second highlights followed by dumb speculation and rumors that aren't even relevant, and a 10 minute story about something that is supposed to make me all emotional but ends up just pissing me off because I didn't tune in to see that. And to top it off, when they actually start talking about sports again it's just about certain individuals. How many minutes will be devoted to TO and Barry Bonds this year?

Re: When did ESPN jump the shark?

The decline of SportsCenter is what has killed ESPN. This was ESPN's cash cow. Every sports fan in the country watched this show at some point from 6 AM to 11 AM during the week. It was an hour long with no gimmicks. For every game highlighted, there was an entire screenshot of the boxscore for that game. The Sportscenter Top Ten plays came at the end of the week on Sunday, not everyday. There weren't 20 billion different anchors doing the show either. There were about 7-8. There were no sponsored segments like the budweiser hot seat.

Until SportsCenter improves, ESPN will be on the decline.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Hey now, Playmakers was a great show. Unfortunately, the NFL took it upon them selves to force ESPN not to show it anymore because of the controversial content.

Almost as pointless as the fake Steve Phillips press conference.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. Anointing them as one of the best teams in history before the Rose Bowl was even played. They looked like huge idiots there.

And whoever said Stump the Schwab, not even close. That's one of the best shows on the ESPN networks right now.

I like Stump the Schwab. I am glad it's not on ESPN or ESPN2 but rather on ESPN Classic. It's the only good thing ever shown on classic, I hate how it's turned into the American Gladiator/2003 Poker championship channel. Right now they should be showing old college and NFL games getting ready for the season. I don't know if they don't have the rights or what to show it but I would love to see some championship games. I wasn't big into sports(born in 90) in 01 so I don't remember 01 miami, and certainly a team like 95 nebraska. I would like to see the cowboys superbowls to.

That channel has so much unreached potential, the only time it's good is during the football season when they show the instant classic. A great game I probably didn't get the chance to see.

Everyone should seriously read the five piece article that was posted in the thread, page 2 I think. Pay close attention to Part 2 of the ESPN decline piece about the anchors/personalities. I was laughing my *** of because it is SPOT ON.
