wow, i hope everyone's families are ok, and those lost/impacted are in our prayers....

I am going to be very interested in the NTSB or Army Corp of Engineers investigation into this (not sure who it falls under). That bridge is just decimated, and structures like that are designed with a safety factor greater than 2, this should just not happen.

That's terrible. It's weird to think that I've driven over that same bridge before...

I work for a company that has an office in the Minneapolis area. I've driven over that bridge while there on a business trip. I hope nobody I know from work was on it or had family on it. My thoughts go out to anyone affected by this tragedy.

This is really unbelievable up here. I've been watching it for 5 hours nonstop. Blood banks are getting depleted. I think I might go to red cross to donate blood. Pray for all the affected families.

Thoughts go out to the families of course, but is anyone else disappointed (again!) with the news coverage? Maybe it's just Fox Noise, but I haven't seen or heard anyone from the big engineering groups that would have ACTUAL knowledge and information...American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), nor the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

You could give the average American a basic working knowledge of bridge design, materials testing (for the concrete work), the joint types and how/why they fail, probable causes, what have you!

Instead you get the same old emotion-based sensationalistic journalism. Give the folks real information!

EDIT: Just read all of MSNBC and CNN's web coverage and only found mention of some fatigue effects on the approach from a 2001 report at CNN.com.

Damn, probably one of my worst nightmare scenarios. I don't think I could dream a scarier scenario, this is the type of stuff in horror movies. I can't imagine the horror of this situation.

The best we can do is learn from this tremendous disaster and help ease the pain of those that lost loved one in this, which is IMHO going to be one of the worst engineering failures/accidents of our generation.
