              Ya... 16 is legal in most states.

              If you are over 18 and the girl is under 18, they can get you for corruption of minors.

                  The song was written by Sam Cooke in 1959 when he was 29 years old now here's the kicker

                  It was probably written in Lou Rawls' parents' apartment in Chicago, maybe about Rawls' stepsister Marian, who turned sixteen in 1959 (source: You Send Me book

                          16 is by far the most common age of consent. I know California is 18, there are a few states that are 17, but 16 is by far the most common and the lowest age of consent you will find. That being said it is only 14 in Canada for inane reasoning.

                              Ummmm not in most states. Some states have what I call a blended age of consent, Missouri being one of them. In these states it generally works that if you are under 21 the age of consent is 16, if you are over 21 the age of consent is 18. However most states have a flat age of consent, such as Massachusetts, in Mass. once you are 16 you can consent to sexual relations with whomever you want who is over 16. As such, a 16 year old can legally have sex with a 17 year old just as easily as a 40 year old.

                              For those wondering how I know this, I did a thesis paper on the improper use of the AOC laws in Southern states as aimed at African Americans, former Vanderbilt commitment Marcus Dixon was the main subject. More recently Genarlow Wilson would show this treatment. I've also been working on a case that made me learn some of these laws.
