    New Laptop help

Alright, I just got my new Dell laptop for school today. I was wondering if anyone can help me by suggesting anti virus and security free ware and all those goodies that will help me out. I really wanna keep this comp safe and running smooth. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

free.grisoft.com - AVG Free, one of the best antivirus programs out there. They update for free and the entire program is free. Definitely a recommended download.

For the rest of these, you can goto download.com and download it there..

    Spybot Search & Destroy - Anti-Spyware

CCcleaner - Use this to erase any unnecessary files that take up space, it also helps to keep your cache and cookies clean.

Windows Defender - Probably the only anti-spyware/adware you'll need. If you don't want to download spybot, you can download this and it should keep all ads and spyware off your system. Goto the Microsoft website to DL.

Firefox - Probably the best browser you can use. Don't forget to download Adblock, which is an extension for Firefox to help keep ads away from your computer.

Thats the jist of it. There are other programs you can DL such as Adaware, but I feel that those programs do nothing but take up precious resources. 3 main things I always put on my systems are:

    1) AVG Free
    2) FireFox
    3) CCCleaner

    4) Spybot is an extra added spyware protection. But if you're like me, and you know the sites that you frequently visit are legit, you shouldn't have to worry about spyware.

Just wondering, but what model did you get? So far, Dell has been the worst customer service I've ever run into and I honestly don't know if I'll ever see my laptop that I ordered a while back.
      I do because I can, I can because I want, I want because you say I can't

I agree to that. Customer service is terrible. I had to do a Plasma TV exchange with them and it took 4-5 days just to process the order. 4-5 days of calling 2-3 times a day.

After they said they would overnight they said they could only do ground on plasma because plasma cannot travel to air or it could break or something like that. Just terrible CS.

But they usually have good prices and I recently bought a notebook from them in March/April. Hopefully will never have to call CS to exchange it.

Pretty much everything that guy said, but the best way to keep your computer clean is to not be an idiot. Don't go downloading everything under the sun, don't open email attachments from people you don't know. don't install things that pop up when you're browsing the internet. In all reality, if you don't do stupid stuff like that, you won't need a/v or any of that stuff.

Thanks much guys! This is exactly what I needed. I got an Inspiron 1521. IMO its gorgeous, but I might be a bit biased. LOL. I ended up going with a Dell b/c my school offered a $500 discount and I've had Dell desktops in the past.
