At the time people knew of the health risks, but no one could stand up to the big tobacco companies because of their influence and the immense amount of money/resources they had. Al Pacino plays the 60 Minutes producer that coaxes Wigand to do an interview on the show, which at the time was THE journalistic standard. Christopher Plummer does a flat-out amazing job as Mike Wallace; he has his mannerisms and tone down pat (there's a great scene reenactment of when he interviewed the sheik of Iran). It seems like it would be a boring boardroom story but it's directed by Michael Mann, and it crackles with energy.

I just find the movie fascinating because I'm old enough to remember when the tobacco companies were able to get away with denying they had knowledge of cigarettes' health risks, and how no one could really challenge them. The movie shows why it was so difficult to break that barrier and how even a huge company like CBS were compromised in the face of the power the tobacco companies had. Great movie; Russell Crowe and Pacino are excellent. I've been wanting to get the movie on dvd but it's hard to find
I've seen the movie and it's pretty good, abelt a bit slow at times. As far as I remember the ending was kind of out of nowhere as well. Certainly it's one of the better movies Pacino has done in the '90s at the very least.

Excellent movie-I'll go one step further then spankdatazz and say that Plummer's Mike Wallace is almost eerie in it's capturing of the CBS news icon. Crowe should have won the Best Actor (IMO) for his performance. Pacino is terrific. Like spankdatazz said it's anything but a boring boardroom story. In fact there are no slow spots in the entire film.

After seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I'm adding it to this list.

What I got out of that movie was simply amazing.

Thought this was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but movies like music are in the eyes and ears of the beholder, so if it makes you happy, I'm happy. I found it totally pretentious and predictable with a shaky cam making me sick for "artistic" effect.

One I forgot that's one of my all time favorites is "The King of Comedy" by Scorsese with DeNiro. Black comedy, awesome movie, go find it.

Its a great film with a pretty cool premise. I could actually see this being remade since cloning/genetics is still pretty hot-topic. Plus, Gregory Peck as a Nazi? Awesome.

Anyway, the way I interpreted this thread was to post movies that fly under the radar that are great films - I've seen some pretty big films in here, but thats neither here nor there...

I watched Shinobi: Heart Under Blade this past weekend and I have to recommend it to all the martial arts film fans. The premise is basically Romeo & Juliet with ninjas. There are some pretty cool fight sequences throughout the film and some beautiful cinematography as well. I liked the basis of the film being destiny vs free will - made for a cool push/pull dynamic between the two lovers.
