    Blade Runner

On December 18th, three different editions of Blade Runner will be released. Having never seen the movie, but hearing a lot of great things about it, I figured I would pre-order one and let the rest of you fans know about them.

    5-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition
    Disc One
RIDLEY SCOTT'S ALL-NEW "FINAL CUT" VERSION OF THE FILM
Restored and remastered with added & extended scenes, added lines, new and cleaner special effects and all new 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Also includes:
    • Commentary by Ridley Scott
    • Commentary by executive producer/co-screenwriter Hampton Fancher and co-screenwriter David Peoples; producer Michael Deely and production executive Katherine Haber
    • Commentary by visual futurist Syd Mead; production designer Lawrence G. Paull, art director David L. Snyder and special photographic effects supervisors Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich and David Dryer
    Disc Two
DOCUMENTARY DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER
A feature-length authoritative documentary revealing all the elements that shaped this hugely influential cinema landmark. Cast, crew, critics and colleagues give a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the film -- from its literary roots and inception through casting, production, visuals and special effects to its controversial legacy and place in Hollywood history.
    Disc Three
    1982 THEATRICAL VERSION
This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford's character narration and has Deckard and Rachel's (Sean Young) "happy ending" escape scene.
    1982 INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.
    1992 DIRECTOR'S CUT
The Director's Cut omits Deckard's voiceover narration and removes the "happy ending" finale. It adds the famously-controversial "unicorn" sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.
    Disc Four
BONUS DISC - "Enhancement Archive": 90 minutes of deleted footage and rare or never-before-seen items in featurettes and galleries that cover the film's amazing history, production teams, special effects, impact on society, promotional trailers, TV spots, and much more.
    • Featurette "The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Philip K. ****"
    • Featurette "Sacrificial Sheep: The Novel vs. The Film"
    • Philip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews (audio)
    • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Cover Gallery (images)
    • The Art of Blade Runner (image galleries)
    • Featurette "Signs of the Times: Graphic Design"
    • Featurette "Fashion Forward: Wardrobe & Styling"
    • Screen Tests: Rachel & Pris
    • Featurette "The Light That Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth"
    • Unit photography gallery
    • Deleted and alternate scenes
    • 1982 promotional featurettes
    • Trailers and TV spots
    • Featurette "Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art"
    • Marketing and merchandise gallery (images)
    • Featurette "Deck-A-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard"
    • Featurette "--Nexus Generation: Fans & Filmmakers"
    Disc Five
    WORKPRINT VERSION
This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending," altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more. Also includes:
    • Commentary by Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner
    • Featurette "All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cut"

    4-Disc Collector's Edition

First four discs of the Ultimate Edition

    2-Disc Special Edition
First two discs of the Ultimate Edition.

The 5-Disc set will be released on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray in two different packages - one package will be the suitcase for around $70 and one package will be without the suitcase in a regular jewel case for around $30.

Interesting..........are they only going to charge $70 for the HD-DVD suitcase? I would think it would cost more.

          Doesn't appear that way.

          5-Disc Ultimate Edition (DVD)
          5-Disc Ultimate Edition (Blu-Ray) w/o suitcase
          5-Disc Ultimate Edition (Blu-Ray) w/ suitcase
          5-Disc Ultimate Edition (HD-DVD) w/o suitcase
          5-Disc Ultimate Edition (HD-DVD) w/ suitcase

At least for now. Regular price seems to be $100 for the BR and HD-DVD suitcase sets.

Damn, that is a TON of Blade Runner.

I own the regular DVD and this movie has aged better then any other movie I can think of.

I think the 5-Disc set is cool and all (mainly because of the workprint version of the film), but that suitcase would be ridiculous for storage.

I'd consider getting the 5 disc set just for the workprint version.

This will be my first Blu-Ray purchase. Nothing else has tempted me to take the plunge.

It truly is timeless. But I hate alternate endings and I wouldn't consider the movie to be as good without the voiceover and thus that film noir feel.

                          Re: Blade Runner

First off, not gonna put any spoiler notices up because the film is over 20 years old. Now I just watched the film for the first time, and did enjoy it. Pace was a tad slow for my taste, but not enough to really hate on. Anyway, I watched it because a buddy wanted me to see it and answer the question..."Do you think Deckard was a replicant?"

My answer is....no. Again, my first time watching and it did lose me a few times. But the replicants all seem to be super strong, and have issues with their eyes (the reflection of light)....Deckard has neither.

Some of you I know are much more versed in this film than I am, and I would like to know what your thoughts were on this issue. And the film in general. Thanks guys...

#6 all-time for me, best Sci-Fi mover ever, IMO. I love the voice over and non-voice over versions equally. I first saw it in 1986 on VHS. I saw it in HD for the first time on the SyFy HD channel just a few days ago. I was stunned at how great it looked. Thematically perfect, in terms of what I'm looking for in a movie.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

The only version I've seen is the director's cut which includes the unicorn scenes. I think you can make the case that Deckard is a replicant.
