Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
I read today on that the company that owns Game Crazy and Hollywood Video is in financial trouble.
I have some store credit from game trades, so I am cashing it in now just in case.
They were always much more convenient than BB for me. -
Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
The parent company (Movie Gallery, Inc.) is now in bankruptcy and many stores are closing.
My local store closed in December, literally overnight.
I went to another nearby HV/GC today and saw the Store Closing Sale sign. DVD's and games 20% off. The clerk said all the stores in the area (Long Island, NY) are closing.Comment

Moovie Gallery in my parent's town is closing. The prices were still higher than what I'd pay online.Comment

Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
My mom was telling me the other day how the Hollywood Videos by her were closing. They use Netflix so doesn't matter, we just happened to be discussing that it'd been forever since we actually rented a video in a store.

Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
There's a Hollywood Video in Madison that just closed down. There's also three Movie Gallerys around here that have closed or are in the process of closing.
Personally, I'm taking advantage of the closings. I went to the one down the street from where I work on their last day and scored 12 Blu Rays for $23. A couple weeks before that, I got 6 Blu Rays for less than $60(these were newer releases/better movies than the 12 I got later). I never rented movies anyways, so I'm just enjoying the cheap Blu Rays.
That being said, I feel bad for those losing their jobs. I kinda felt bad that last time I shopped there before they closed. I felt like I was taking advantage of their misfortune. But I guess that's just how it goes.
I keep watching to see if the Movie Gallery here where I live will close. I'd like to get in there before the video games get picked through .Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
You know, I'm not trying to sound political about anything but I'm not feeling too sorry for these companies. Why don't they lower their costs for rentals to make it even remotely competitive to this cheaper guys around the block? How come they could not foresee that their same costs would not cut it when the economy is in the state that it is in is mind boggling.
For years BB has been over charging for the rental of DVDs and games when they could have been making better strides. I stopped using them when the local kid (Family Video) had those beautiful rentals. $1.oo a day rentals for new releases was solid and kept the consumer coming in. Maybe they became too big for themself but they really could have experimented. I don't know how HV was with rental but they didn't seem that much different from BB which turned me off before rentingfrom them. They were a solid alternative to Gamestop but there is no other catch. I do feel remorse and sympathy for those who will lose their jobs these next few months.Comment

Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
I completely agree with the above post. Sucks for the workers, but charging obscene prices relative to your competition, they had to believe it was coming.
Why pay $4.99 for a 2-day rental when I can pay $15 a month for unlimited 2-at-a-time via Netflix?Comment

I can only speak from experience, but free time is the limiting factor for me renting movies, not price. The difference between a $2 movie or a $4 movie is nothing, IMO, and isn't the reason I go with other options. So even if Hollywood cut their prices in half, I doubt I would have rented many more movies than I currently do.
The only advantage they had over the Red Box's was a selection of older movies...and the only advantage against Net Flicks was the fact that you could get a movie on release day instead of waiting a day or a week (depending how far back you were out on the Netflix waiting list).
They could have tried to get in the video by mail business, but unless they had ideas to do it better than Netflix and BB, why would anyone switch to them?
The bottom line is their business became outdated and because they didn't get in the video by mail business before BB, their days were numbered and Blockbuster is in a very similar situation.Comment

Re: Game Crazy/Hollywood Video Folding?
I am glad they are closing, out here anyway workers were only getting paid $6.25 an hour and they never had more then 15 copies of a brand new game at a time. So I started calling them the sold out store, because they were sold out of stuff 98% of the time. And their used games were even more over priced then Gamestop.
Heck they still was selling Batman for $60 and NBA 2k10 for $60, when all the other stores had them for $30.Comment
