    Hey guys,

My modem and router are in the basement and Im on the 2nd floor, meaning my desktop has no internet. Is it possible to plug my laptop to my desktop and get wireless internet through there?

You need to buy a wireless card for your desktop.

          Question:

Different computers near my house are picking up our wireless internet and using it themselves.

Do you know how to set it up where only people within my household can, via a password?

You'll have to log into your router and setup WEP key. There should be directions on the website from your router.

Really depends on what wireless router you use.

Most routers' config pages can be accessed on your web browser. Usually it's 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.100, etc ... and once you hit the page, the default user/pass is something like admin/(blank), admin/password, admin/admin... so just give it a whirl then you'll get in the config pages.

Once you're there, change your admin/pass (this is important because if someone stands close enough to your house they can change your router settings). Then go inside, set your encryption to WPA-PSK, and Google "WPA Key Generator" to get yourself a 64-character secure WPA key. Then just copy and paste the key to your other computers and set up your little network so that no one else can get in.

Again, it's hard to say how to exactly configure your router without specifics (brand name, model).

WEP protection is no longer suffice. The key is too short, meaning even novice hackers can break into your wireless network if they wanted to. It only takes 10 minutes to bruteforce the key. Think of WEP as an unlocked door of your house, it offers minimalistic protection.

If your wireless router supports it (if it's a recent router, it definitely will have WPA), you should always go for WPA encryption.
