The $27M search for a woodpecker

    <a href="http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/nat-gen/2007/aug/23/082302980.html">$27M Woodpecker Habitat Plan Unveiled</a>

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Federal wildlife officials say spending more than $27 million to research the suspected habitat of the ivory-billed woodpecker is worth the cost, despite conflicting views on whether the elusive bird even exists.

"There's enough out there that we've got to keep searching," said Jeff Fleming, a spokesman for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "It'd be irresponsible not to."
So like....$27M to protect a woodpecker, which, oh by the way, might not even exist. Sweet! Maybe they should, you know, find one first before spending $27M to protect it. Unless the $27M is actually going to be used in search efforts, in which case I guess my question is, does it really take $27M to find a woodpecker?

Jesus you've got to be ****ting me. They should be ashamed of themselves for spending that much on a ******* woodpecker. That's pretty upsetting.

If it was Connecticut, I could understand, but Arkansas? Shouldn't they be more worried about getting running water to their residents?

Spending that much money to save one species, one that may not even exist, is stupid. Maybe that money ought to be spent on the bigger picture.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

That's really not relevant, its clearly an AP story.

More on topic, I'm a bit of a nature buff but even I think its a little much. That being said, there are probably lots of projects that are spending this or more money. Ah, the beauty of bureaucracy
