    The Universe on History Channel

Anybody been catching these one-hour specials?

Really good stuff. Definitely rivals the Planet Earth specials on Discovery Channel.

Final special is on Tuesday Night at 8pm.

It's on now and I'm pretty sure they'll continue to run the specials.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Very interesting stuff. I enjoyed the one about how we're all gonna die because of a meteor in 2029. If that doesn't do it, then the gamma waves from a supernova will. Awesome.

I haven't seen too many, but I've enjoyed the ones I have. I really liked the first one about the sun. Good stuff.

Mankind is amazingly afraid of its demise. It seemed like death was a focal point in every one-hour slot. If it wasn't a meteor in one slot, it was a supernova in another. If not a supernove then a galaxy moving toward the Milky Way Galaxy for an inevitable collision. If not that then green house effects eventually resulting in a Venus-like atmosphere.

It appears that NASA has the meteor thing under control. I don't think they are too worried unless they make a mistake (oops).

Mankind should be more worried about the Sun exploding or galaxies colliding with ours.

Yeah, I agree. That's typical history channel doomsday and dire consequences shows. I would have enjoyed the series a bit more without the we're all gonna bite the big one narrative.

Well most of the doomsday scenarios were millions of years in the future.

Some were fact like the Milky Way coliding with another galaxy. Its gonna happen but mankind will never see it.

Yesterday's was about the Big Bang. Great stuff.

I read somewhere that the Big Bang Theory is moving toward scientific fact. A lot of scientists are jumping on board thanks to many of the new findings.
