G.I. Joe to become "Global Task Force"

The popular all-American comic-book military man and action figure dating back to the 1940s is undergoing a significant transformation for the Paramount Pictures-distributed "G.I. Joe" film, which begins production in February and is scheduled for release in summer 2009.

No longer will G.I. Joe be a U.S. Special Forces soldier, the "Real American Hero" who, in his glory days, single-handedly won World War II.

In the politically correct new millennium, G.I. Joe bears no resemblance to the original.

Paramount has confirmed that in the movie, the name G.I. Joe will become an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" — an international, coed task force charged with defeating bad guys. It will no longer stand for government issued, as in issued by the American government.

The studio won't elaborate, saying filming hasn't begun and details are still in the works, but the behind-the-scenes rumblings are that the producers have decided to change the nature of G.I. Joe in order to appeal to a wider, more international audience.

The word is that in the current political climate, they're afraid that a heroic U.S. soldier won't fly.
Hopefully we can keep politics out of this thread, but good lord. "A real American hero, G.I. Joe is there?" Way to completely bastardize what G.I. Joe is all about, Paramount. It's amazing that the post-WWII era spawned a whole generation of movies like Where Eagles Dare and Guns of Navarone that painted US soldiers as completely infallible badasses because everyone was filled with such pro-American sentiment after the war. But in today's climate, we can't make the "real American hero" G.I. Joe an American entity anymore for fear that people won't respond well to the positive characterization of a US soldier.

Weak. At least I've got the cartoons on DVD....

I'm assuming this means the movie will be more similar to the 80's toy/cartoon/comic than the one-man army GI Joe of the 60's. If that's the case, I'm on board because the 80's Joe (especially the comic books) was awesome.

Well I can see that Paramount is trying to cut off the jingoism that'll hurt ticket sales in foreign countries but this is NOT the way to do it.

I'd prefer they keep the All American G.I. Joe concept but cut down on the jingoism within that framework so that there's a lot of wrapping around the flag stuff for Americans but it's accessible for people in other markets.

In fact they should've just set the movie in WWII.

        Oh well.....

I don't really mind...the 80's GI Joe was nothing like an army guy anyways...they had crazy advanced equipment, lasers, etc.

Utterly disgraceful and the movie will utterly flop. Some things are popular for a reason and that just goes right over people's heads oftentimes when they try to make movies out of them.

I understand this mindset from the guys who remember the 60's GI Joe, but the 80's had lasers and ish, nowhere near the US Military in real life. I guess that's why I don't have a problem. I don't remember the old old school GI Joe at all, cause i'm only 27.

The GI Joe guys I remember are more Splinter Cell and less Call of Duty 2

Yeah I'm 37 so that probably is a big difference in terms of the G.I. Joe issue.

Ahh, the 80s G.I. Joe series. So many of those lasers fired, yet I think they may have only killed 1 or 2 guys in that entire series.

Yeah, i've seen some of the old school GI Joe figures, and they're damn awesome...I don't think Cobra existed back then though

I agree. The GI Joe I remember is of the 1980's variety.

Fuzzy hair and Kung Fu grip!

This movie does not make much sense to me!
