Yeah, I heard that on my way to work. As much hate that people have for the guy, people really forget how smart 50 is.

I'm sure I've said it before here that I'm not a huge fan of 50. I respect his rise to fame (he's done it relatively quickly and is now a bigger selling star than guys like Jay-Z - one of today's rappers that people quickly associate with hip hop success).

Thing is, both 50 and Kanye love to talk. They'll talk about themselves, their success, and do it in a conceited, cocky way. It gets annoying.

But, 50 can actually have a conversation with the media without making the discussion about himself. Kanye can't avoid the inevitable - flipping the answer to himself.

So on that regard I enjoy listening to 50 talk because he knows how to back himself up with actual numbers and facts. When he talked about being Mr. Interscope, clearly ignoring the success of Eminem and Dre, he backed it up with sales numbers and the general opinion of hip hop fans. 50 isn't Eminem or Dre but he has every right to believe he's better than them and made himself bigger because right now that's the truth.

Then 50 talks about Kanye being given his success. He didn't make it out to seem like Kanye was silver-spooned into the industry (he definitely wasn't) but he does have a lot of people to thank for his success - most notably Jay-Z and MTV.

It just seems like 50 markets himself as a rapper with a thuggish lifestyle/background. He lets his words, attitude, do the talking. Kanye, on the other hand, markets himself with gimmicks. He needs his talking and attitude to express his opinions and as a result people notice. People noticed 50 before 50 noticed them. Kanye put himself out there to be noticed. There's a difference and Kanye's approach is why a lot of people get put off by his attitude.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer
