It's on: Apple event slated for September 5th

Well the rumors have been floating around for a few days, and now we've gotten official word -- in the form of the invite you see above -- that Apple will be holding a "special event" on September 5th. Let the speculation begin!

I really hope they announce a touchscreen iPod. I need a new iPod and that would be a sure pick-up around the holidays for me.

Looks like the iTunes store will be going wireless according to engadget. Also, the latest rumors are that the new ipods will be touchscreen, OS-X based and will possibly have WiFi.

I'm assuming/hoping we'll see a big update next week if/when the iTunes store goes wireless like we've been hearing.

Just great. I got a 30 GB G5 iPod a little over a month ago and now there may possibly be a G6 with touchscreen capabilities on the horizon? Great.

So really, this new iPod is just the iPhone except it doesn't have the capabilities of a cell phone and has more capacity. Real original, Mr. Jobs.

Wow, some people will never be happy.

I'm expecting them to release the smaller iPhone... and once the new iPod is revealed, I'm purchasing it immediately. I've been holding out forever.

If you would have done any type of research at all, you would have known that they have been planning on releasing it in Q3-Q4 2007 for some time.

I want an iPod thats just a smaller iPhone with no phone capabilities. Because the iPhone is very nice but I don't care to sign up for the phone service. so bring on the touchscreen iPod.

I thought I read the next ipod won't be touch screen, but the one after that would. Widescreen would be nice too.

I am one of the resident apple gurus...

Here is what I believe will be unveiled:

6G iPod: There are tons of rumors going both ways on the touchscreen/non touch screen. It was literally probably 50/50 until about yesterday. The invitation to the event has a picture of the CoverFlow system on it, so I have to believe the new iPod will in fact be a touchscreen. The new iPod will have WiFi capabilities, and will have a MUCH LARGER harddrive than the iPhones. In fact, I have seen a patent recently that had Apple making use of 160GB flash drives. I dont believe that the new iPod will be that big, but I expect it to be large. I think apple will really be pushing movies/videos on this device.


iPhone update: I think there will be an iPhone update, which will consist of a ringtone option in the iTunes interface. From what I have read, you will be able to convert any song you have purchased on iTunes into a ringtone, except for songs released by Universal. There could be other features to iPhone, but I have no evidence to back that up (iChat please)


Music update: Its also been rumored that the Beatles will be released on iTunes.

That sounds interesting, I need something larger than the 30gb Zune I currently have. I can use my BB warranty to return this and put towards the new ipod.
