Router Question

I am using a wireless Linksys B router. Now, when I use my wireless card for my laptop, the connection will be around 3.5 to 4 MBPS. If I go directly into my router, it'll run around 5.3 MBPS. If I go straight to my modem, without the router, it'll be around 7.5 to 8 MBPS.

I know that the wireless slows things down, but does the actual router between the modem and my laptop slow things down too?
