Mmmmm, about 90 minutes in on tivo and I don't think it's anything spectacular so far. No mention of the Doolittle Raid was disappointing (perhaps later?). Putting the Bataan Death March back to back with Japanese Internment rubbed me the wrong way.

      I hope it gets better.

      ............The Guadalcanal segments seem better.

I thought it was great and am looking forward to the rest. I hope a lot of people are watching this - it is a lot more important than all of the enjoyable but mostly mindless shows that appear to be getting a lot more PR in this forum (not that I don't watch some of them as well).

I saw it today. Is the one with Pearl Harbour the first one?

Did you notice the war correspondent Ernie Pyle? He actually died from enemy fire while covering the war.

don't get me wrong, this is a good film, but something is lacking. it think i was looking for more military tactics like in the civil war one. i miss the little bars and maps. they spent like 2 minutes on the invasion of sicily. oh well, i'll still watch.

Burn's has a way of stressing the importance of these events so I find it more than a rehash of the History channel's take.

Agree 100%. This just isn't up to the civil war documentary standard he set. It's good, but not great. I'd even say a bit boring in some spots, but balanced with some excellent segments like the b-17 ball turret gunner stuff.

I have a friend who works as an editor for Burns who has been going on about this for awhile. I tried to watch it, but just couldn't get into it.

It still pales in comparison to the BBC's The World at War narrated by Lawrence Olivier. If you are a WW2 buff and really enjoy the strategic aspects of WW2 then do yourself a favor and search for this set because all aspects from every side of the war is explained in detail. It's pricey and somewhat hard to find but if you can get your hands on it then don't hesitate to buy it. Some of the footage shown is incredible and at over 34 hours, including the extras, nothing is left untouched.

Interesting stat on America's commitment to manufacturing for virtually the war effort alone. In 1941 3 million automobiles were made in the US-only 139 cars were made during the war.

QFT. The "World at War" series is incredible from start to finish and the archival footage is amazing. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in WWII. It is pricey but it shouldn't be too hard to find as they just recently re-issued it in a new box a year or two ago.
