Something that's getting old with TV
This season of TV shows has somewhat reinforced this notion that I have about there being far too much "mystery" in the variety of programming we are now able to view. I find myself becoming very frustrated with the slow developing story lines that have far too many twists and turns. It has become very trendy to get the storyline very close to a conclusion and then inject some odd circumstance or happening that draws out an already exhausted character or situation.

It's the era of the serial drama right now...that's what's "in". Just like 10-15 years ago began the crime drama era. TV goes in cycles...this will eventually work itself out. This season of TV shows has somewhat reinforced this notion that I have about there being far too much "mystery" in the variety of programming we are now able to view. Yep this is true especially with comedy. I watched BACK TO YOU last night and all the jokes could be seen from a mile away. It didn't help that it was the worst episode so far on that show.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

My biggest gripe is that every series I get into gets canceled during or after the first season. It makes me not even want to watch new shows.Comment

Re: Something that's getting old with TV
It's going to happen soon.
The crime-show drama era came before the Serial drama.
Notice the amount of new crime-show dramas out this year compared to the number released last year and the year before. I think the only one this season is Moonlight on CBS (CBS of course dominates this market by the way).
Few have survived (ie: CSI, Criminal Minds, Cold Case).
Almost every one released last year (exception Shark) is gone.
Someone will end up releasing the dirty step child of Prison Break mixed with Lost and Vegas and it'll be the end of the new serial dramas.
Then it'll probably be improv comedy sitcoms next."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Something that's getting old with TV
I don't mind a specific theme running through these shows. What bugs me is the constant guessing I find myself doing. It's what made me actually turn off my favorite show from last year (Heroes). I turned it off in disgust. I then see excellent shows that don't follow the "mystery road" like The Black Donnelleys get canceled and it just frustrates me.
There's really only one show (drama) this season that has me looking forward to the next showing. That would be Cane.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Re: Something that's getting old with TV
The mystery is what keeps these shows interesting. If Lost was just a character study or soap opera (like Cane) then it would've been canceled already. It's what makes the show intriguing. And Heroes pretty much answered every question by the end of the season.I don't mind a specific theme running through these shows. What bugs me is the constant guessing I find myself doing. Also, The Black Donnelly's was pretty much Brotherhood-lite. It was still pretty good but there was a similar but much better show out there.Comment

I like a mixture of mystery/serial dramas, but also shows where every episode is more a capsule, so I don't have to constantly be watching to know what's up.The mystery is what keeps these shows interesting. I can watch any episode of any Law and Order variety and enjoy it. I couldn't easily watch Lost or Heroes Season 2 episode 4 and as much enjoyment by itself. I don't have the time to watch tons and tons of serial shows.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment
