Too bad Johnston doesn't work with them anymore. I hate Buck on baseball but he has grown into an excellent football announcer. Sometimes he tries to pull his "i'm gonna try to be funny here" stunts but Aikman unlike McCarver doesn't go for that bull. Aikman has also become the best analyst in football these days. It's nice to see him succeeding so well after all those concussions.

Agreed, He's been bar none the best announcer in Canada by a country mile since Shulman went down south. I remember watching Hughson doing Blue Jays games on TSN and NHL games with IIRC Gary Green. He was always very professional and unlike other peers of his he knows when to shut up.

I haven't seen him do hockey games yet. He does Oilers games right? I have seen him on Hockey Central which is the hockey panel show here on Sportsnet and he's always been a very honest guy who doesn't go overboard or follows the crowd when things go badly. For instance, when discussing the hit on McAmmond he was very calm and explained his reasons for not liking it at all without going into hysterics.

I've seen a couple of those NCAA broadcasts with Shulman and he's fantastic. I think he's a better baseball broadcaster tho. I've been a HUGE fan of his since his days on the FAN 590 hosting his own radio show. He was clearly in the top 5 baseball announcers when he was teamed with Buck Martinez on TSN calling Jays games. The guy can do it all. Heck, I think he even did some boxing PBP at one point. I can't wait for the day that Jon Miller retires or Shulman goes to another network to call baseball because he's truly in a rarefied air. If only he'd get a chance to display his gifts on national TV more often.

This is the only people on your list that I have any argument against. Of course, they win by default as NBC and ESPN just don't know how to make NASCAR entertaining. The problem with these guys is that they revert to the stereotypical "redneck, good ol' boys" mentality of NASCAR. At times Waltrip seems to lose his grasp of the english language and makes up whole new words! Other then that tho they're excellent. I especially like listening to Larry McReynolds explaining the car setups and pit strategies etc etc.

      SPTO:

Yes, Ferraro is the booth analyst with play-by-play man Kevin Quinn during Oilers' games on Sportsnet. He's one of the few team analysts who isn't afraid to rip "his team."

You're right about Waltrip's fractured syntax and McReynolds' "They was ... " grammatical gaffes. But the guys know the sport inside out. They can predict strategies before they occur, and their enthusiasm and honesty keep races interesting even when they're boring. And unlike Wally Dallenbach on TNT, whose NASCAR driving career was a joke, and Rusty Wallace on ABC/ESPN, DW doesn't fall back on the cliched "back when I was driving" comments that often.

I see Waltrip a lot like Don Cherry on "HNIC." Both are figures from the sport's past, with unique, interesting mannerisms and keen insights that often are spot-on. And the broadcasts of hockey and NASCAR would be poorer without Cherry and Waltrip, respectively.

Regarding Hughie, there's nobody in North American stick-and-ball broadcasting who involves and sets up his analysis partner better. And Hughson also calls a great game, knowing exactly when to get excited and when to stay calm.

P.S.: I had no idea Schulman came from Canada. Thanks for the info.!

      Take care,
      PK

Personally I find Daryl Johnston boring and don't think he brings anything special to the table. I find many of the pro football analysts are very mediocre to just plain bad.

I think the college football team of Lundquist and Danielson is excellent. There are many good college football announcers. I like Nessler and Griese too although I'm confused as to why a moron like Paul Maguire is in a three man booth with them (unless they have to honour his ESPN contract). Dan Fouts is really good but I don't know why he went to play-by-play.

Re: Sports Broadcaster Negative Rating Poll #1

I voted for Phil Simms, Chris Berman, and Keith Olbermann.

Simms is a good analyst, but he gets a bit too holier than thou at times, and his constant references to his playing career get tiresome. He knows his stuff a lot of the time, but he needs to tone it down a bit.

Berman is just a cartoon character. It was cute when I was 12 years old, but it is sad and pathetic almost twenty years later.

Olbermann is just too smarmy and self important. He is nowhere near as witty and humorous as he thinks he is.

I considered voting for D*** Enberg, as he is getting really senile and needs to call it a career, but his voice is awesome, imo, and it just makes me nostalgic thinking about all the games he called when I was growing up.

Too bad these guys aren't together anymore. Simms is now paired with Nantz who is a mediocre PBP announcer and he is better suited for golf. Gumbel is paired with Dierdorf who can get really annoying at times.

I agree that one of the most underrated announcers is Dan Shulman. He is excellent with both baseball and college basketball.

Announcer underrated announcing duo is Marv Albert and Boomer Esiason who do the national broadcast of MNF on the radio on Westwood One. Much better than Tirico/Jaws/Kornheiser do on ESPN.

God, you can tell I'm a Bills' fan, can't you? The Bills' games always get the C- or D-level announcers!

Absolutely! Miles ahead of the ESPN trio. Marv still is one of the best PBP guys, and Boomer is an insightful, opinionated analyst.

One name I forgot to add to my list of top sports broadcasters:

Kelly Hrudey, "Hockey Night in Canada." "Behind the Mask" is a great weekly segment in which Hrudey and partner Scott Oake break down film from the preceding period, and Hrudey breaks down hockey film as well as anyone. Hrudey also expresses firm, passionate, thoughtful opinions about various issues in the game and isn't afraid to rip anyone.

Anyway I can get a mod to lock this thread so I can get a freeze on the stats? I inadvertently put Poll #1's closing date to far ahead.
