    How good is HBO's "Rome"?

I'm a HUGE fan of HBO original series'. Deadwood and The Wire are two of my favorite shows, and i've heard fantastic things about Rome as well. In your opinion, is the show worth the $55 (season 1) I can get it for at DeepDiscount.com? I'm pretty big into the time period as well, so I was already considering it, but I wanted to check with you guys first and see just HOW good it is. Thanks.

I'd suggest Carnivale over Rome, but since you're into the time period, you should like it.

I really enjoyed Rome, its a fantastic show and I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you are normally interested in that time period already.

Ditto. Very good show. My only complaint is that Season 2 felt rushed. I really feel like they could have spread it out over 3 seasons instead of just 2.

I agree 100% with you there, always wished they would have slowed it down and had 3 seasons instead of 2 but atleast it didnt turn into those shows that hang around too long and begin to go from good to bad.

Its the best series I've ever seen. Totally serious about that too.

Re: How good is HBO's "Rome"?

Well, I picked this up a couple weeks back, and just recently got the chance to finally sit down and watch some of the first season of Rome. I've gotta say, the first few episodes were pretty good, but from then on to where I am at now (episode 10), Rome has been the most compelling television I have ever seen. Ever.

All of the characters are played to perfection by the actors. There are so many contrasting personalities, and EVERYONE is corrupt in someway or another. That's what has really interested me, is trying to figure out what angles the next attack on either Ceasar or someone in Rome would come from, and it has ranged from the women in power (mainly Attia), to Ceasar in Egypt, to trying to figure out where Marc Antony's allegiance truly lies.

Lucky for me, I know enough of the time period to know most of the characters, but I don't recall how everything went down, so there are some surprises on the show for me.

I have to say though that without the actors on this show, it would be decent at best. Mckidd and Stevenson are both fierce and hilarious at the same time as Vorenus and Pullo, two completely contrasting personalities that become the closest of friends (well, for the time being). Also, I don't recall his name, but the actor portraying Ceasar is astounding. He can go from caring and passionate one second, to fierce and dominant the next.

Anyways, i'm rambling. Just wanted to say how great this show is, and I can't wait to pick up season 2.

I'd have replied had I seen this thread earlier, but yeah it was a great series. It was definitely rushed the second season but they made the most of the limited episodes, it's in my collection.
                  PS: You guys are great.

HBO does that. They want to make epic shows set in a certain time, but then rush them because they don't want to pay the cost anymore. You feel cheated when you pay for HBO for really no other reason but for two shows, and then they whine about how much money one of those shows costs to make.

exactly...Carnivale, Deadwood & Rome were all very good shows that had endings that just left me frustrated

Never got into Carnivale, but I gotta agree with Deadwood. I was heading into the final episodes of season 3 expecting a big western gunfight in the streets, and all I got was Hearst riding away from Deadwood. That's it. No conclusion. The series as a whole was absolutely fantastic, but my word, they really left everyone hanging on this one.

There have been rumors of David Milch directing two feature length episodes of Deadwood that would conclude the series, but supposedly it's not very likely. Just too many question marks.

The wife and I just finished watching this show on DVD and I loved it. The interactions between Pullo and Verenus were always great and the acting was superb (especially Marc Antony). It's too bad they had to rush to finish the storyline at the end. I highly recommend this series to any history buffs out there.

Rome was the reason Deadwood stopped shooting since they both cost so much per episode. I've had a hard time wanting to watch it for that reason. Silly I know, but I'm still mad Deadwood didn't get a proper way to end the show.

This is from Bruno Heller (Co-Creator) and sheads some light on why season two was so fast.

I discovered halfway through writing the second season the show was going to end. The second was going to end with the death of Brutus. Third and fourth season would be set in Egypt. Fifth was going to be the rise of the messiah in Palestine. But because we got the heads-up that the second season would be it, I telescoped the third and fourth season into the second one, which accounts for the blazing speed we go through history near the end. There's certainly more than enough history to go around.
