I've experienced issues in the past similar to what you're explaining. I believe it has something to do with the battery indicator not properly displaying what the charge is on the battery.

It's the problem with rechargeable batteries. After a while, they simply don't hold a charge very well. My iPod can only be used if it's plugged in now. The battery won't last more than 20 minutes or so on its own. It's annoying that they designed the things so you can't easily replace the battery. I'm sure it was intentional because they'd prefer you just buy a new one when the battery dies.

He bought his iPod less than a month ago. That's not the issue.

Thanks guys, I was over at the apple forums and iLounge. Some people are pinpointing the issue to the latest firmware causing the Classics to get quicker battery drain. Even when your shutting it down, for some reason it is not properly shutting down from their comments causing the battery to drain.

I'll just take a trip to the apple store after work, I get paranoid about these things and I'll have them take a look at it. Some people on the forums had to have theirs replaced already, which I would not be looking forward to.

Pared, what did you do to fix yours?

I basically just did a full drain and a full recharge. That usually takes care of it.

But this was on the older models. They may have done slight modifications to the hardware or the new UI may be causing the battery drain.

It's really sad.... all these new devices have had issues one way or another.

I'm kicking myself in the *** right now for not holding on to the Zune. The software sucked big time, but the player itself was solid. I'm going to see if the Apple store will replace it for me, but I fear that its the latest firmware that has caused these issues. Some people over at the Apple forum are getting anywhere from 3-4 hours of playback before they need to recharge, so some have it worse than others.

Oh well, you never know......if I can't get this thing fixed, I could be running back to the Zune as much as I don't want to. I'm really liking this ipod classic and the new software.

The first few weeks that I have had this thing, it literally took 2-3 days at a time before I needed to recharge the battery.

I feel just like the people here on OS with all those broken 360's, except its the iPod. I agree with you, we spend $200+ on these electronics and they can't last a month at times.

Another question, I can disregard a firmware upgrade when prompted through itunes correct? I hope they give me another one tonight and there is no way 1.0.2 is going on there, until the next firmware comes out and is working solid.

They'll hook you up, don't worry. Apple is usually pretty good of taking care of their customers, especially if it's something not your fault.

Rocky, I have owned a G3 and G5.5 iPods in the past and have never had issues. Since you and Pared are experienced iPod users, have the firmwares in the past caused issues to your iPod's or even others that you have read about? Next time I'm not installing a firmware until the darn thing has been out for a few weeks.

If that's the case, get yourself to an Apple store quick... that way you can find a new one that hasn't been updated.

Like RT said, they're usually very accommodating. Just tell them you read on their own Apple discussion forums it might be related to firmware.

Thanks Pared, I just called the Apple Store and they sent me to their support. The guy wanted me to send it in, but I asked if I can take it to the store and get myself and exchange. He said that Apple has no problem exchanging it out like Rocky suggested, so they made me an appointment/reservation to exchange it.

I got another Classic from the Apple Store earlier tonight. The guy wanted to try and fix mine, but I told him that I don't want to mess around with it and would like another one. Only thing is that he came from the back with one in a box that looked like a refurb box, but when we took it out of the box everything looked brand new. I don't know if they have iPods sitting in the back that are ready for exchange since I doubt they would have refurbs of the Classic already since its only been out for 1 month. Who knows.

I hope that this works and gives me no charging issues. I didn't update the firmware to the latest yet, I'll see how this works first before trying to put the latest on it again.

I'm on Day 4 with my new Classic that I just got on Monday after they switched out my previous one that would only last 3-4 hours if that of playtime after being fully charged.

I didn't install 1.0.2, and its still running the original firmware. I make sure that before I shut it down that I get out of Cover Flow and head straight to the main menu. Then I power off with Pause/Play button and then lock it. So far, I have used this thing about 6-7 hours each day from Tuesday, Wednesday, and today I still have more than 3/4th of battery left. I think the firmware had something to do with the HDD all of a sudden being on all the time, I just can't see so many people having defective iPod's because there are a lot of people complaining here and at the Official iPod forums.

Like I told my wife the other night, I'm giving this thing one last chance and if it starts to do the same ****, I'm taking it back to Apple store for another one and then it goes up on ebay. I'm just going to go with the Zune2, I never had problems with the Zune the 9 months that I had it except for the garbage software that they had. The device worked flawlessly.
