My top candidates are usually the most down to earth and intelligent people. That puts Colbert in my top three, easily.

      Likewise.

Having seen multiple interviews where he is himself, he seems like a really nice, intelligent, and down to earth guy. I love his character, but the man himself is pretty cool as well.

with that said, I love his show and his character. I'm guessing they are also interested in how many people they can get to actually vote for him, maybe more than the actual joke itself.
I think you're right, but the way things are now, the "real" candidates are jokes also. The system is fueled by money and many candidates that are fit for the position are excluded because of their lack of popularity/money.

I think Colbert is really funny but I think it's silly to say that the candidates are all jokes because the system runs on money. So you're saying a very good candidate from a very poor background should be able to get his message out? How? It takes money. Go back to our founding fathers, they were not poor, far from it.

It's just how society works, those with money have a better chance to get their beliefs and ideas out. It doesn't mean the people with money who are running are jokes. And it doesn't mean that if you're a good candidate but don't have the money to compete that you are somehow getting screwed. It just is what it is.

Has anyone found out if he really is running or if its a joke. Ive been looking for information on it, and its starting to seem like he really is doing it.

Just to give you an example, I was watching the Republican Debates and I think it was Duncan Hunter that had made what I believe was an excellent point about economics and then was followed by Giuliani and his comments on the topic. Both gave different but good responses, but Giuliani's response was applauded. Now, you can credit that to him making the better point but I think it had more to do with people being familiar and more understanding with him.

I'm not calling either candidate a joke, but it's just frustrating that a guy who probably has some good ideas is getting overlooked because another is more popular. I guess it's no different than high school student body elections.

Except the person with the most votes in the High School election wins. Not so for the Presidential race.

I see your point, but being President is about a variety of factors. Otherwise we'd just elect the biggest egghead brainiac we can find.

Re: Stephen Colbert running for president!

Sometimes someone can rise above the "not a big name/no money" situation. Howard Dean, if he had played his cards right could've been a factor in the '04 primaries but he mucked it up with that big meltdown. The internet participation is in its infancy but I can see a day where a candidate gets major backing and money on the strength of online donors and such. Just look at how well Obama did in that department until he was shown to be a bit green in the debates. (BTW if Hillary gets the nom, Obama's gonna be the veep candidate)

The Republicans haven't been too keen on using the internet but Ron Paul has used it to his advantage. He started out with very little money and was definitely a second tier candidate but he's got a huge internet base that has given him enough money theoretically for a national campaign. The more important thing about Paul tho, is that with this money and with this backing he will have an impact on how the GOP define their party platform at the GOP Convention.

Getting back to Colbert and away from real life politics, I think he is a great actor for doing his character. It's funny that right wing folks like myself can watch the show, know what he is doing, but still enjoy it all. And you know that liberals can also enjoy it for the same reason. It's a great concept and executed just perfectly because if it wasn't done just right it'd be an appealing show to only half of the country.
