Mark Zuckerberg: The New Bill Gates?

Yesterday, it was announced that Microsoft had bought a 1.6% stake in Facebook for $240 million, valuing the social utility site at roughly $15 billion. The deal makes geeky twenty-three-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, at least on paper, worth $5 billion. Talk about revenge of the nerds.

Facebook began as a Harvard-specific site through which students could rate each other's hotness in Zuckerberg's dorm room (possibly with some other people who have since sued him).

After reportedly almost getting kicked out of school for creating the site, and following the advice of hero Bill Gates, Zuckerberg dropped out to pursue Facebook full-time. Brave!

Why didn't I think of that?? It seems like everytime one of these deals go down I find myself asking this question...

You could always invent a sports gaming site where we can talk about sports games, actual sporting events, and just random crap.

We could sure use one of those.

Isn't he also getting sued by a rival social networking site for stolen code? I thought I had heard something to that effect.

Not to knock him or anything, Facebook is the ultimate procrastination tool, and for that I thank him (as I'm sure he thanks me for helping build his exploding bank account).

Whoever created MySpace should steal code from Facebook because MySpace is a piece of slow crap.

It's amazing how streamlined Facebook is despite all of it's additions.

Re: Mark Zuckerberg: The New Bill Gates?

I wouldn't say the new Bill Gates...If anyone I'd single out someone more like Kevin Rose who has done multiple sites. Zuckerberg's rich, and Facebook's hot right now, but I don't think it's got quite the long term appeal/room for growth like Microsoft did. Also, most of these social networking sites really only target the 25 and under crowd, older people (my parents, even me to some extent) don't really go to Facebook. I have a profile, but I was a few years after Facebook got huge.

Not ripping on Zuckerberg at all, it's amazing what he pulled off, just not quite sure he's the genius people may think.

Myspace is really terrible now and it's filled with spam.

Re: Mark Zuckerberg: The New Bill Gates?

Well, friendster is another crap site. They had potential to do things right but they do everything MySpace does worse and don't offer the connectivity between friends that facebook offers.

MySpace is pure garbage. I'm gonna continue posting in this thread with new negative adjectives to describe that site. The only reason I still have a profile on that abysmal pile of dog feces is because I have long lost dumb friends on it that still don't understand the greatness that is Facebook.
