Considering CD sales have been on a huge decline, yet artists are getting richer from record deals, I doubt they're hurting. Don't most artists get like, $.10 per CD sold anyway? CD sales are nothing. -

Thank you. I don't know why people who are against file sharing can't seem to grasp that. Artists get paid from record deals & concerts. Period.Originally posted by EWRMETSMaybe the best post in OS's history. If you don't think Tony Romo is a Hall of Famer, you support al Qaeda.Comment

Yes, but if the music company isn't making money because the songs are file-shared, the artist gets a less-lucrative record deal. That's Stephen pages point, as he supports file-sharing.Comment

Musicians don't make money from CD's, if they do it is very very small amount (even those big mega stars don't make a great deal from record contracts).
The way musicians make money is from live shows. That is the way it has always been. Sell T-Shirts, get Budweiser to sponsor a tour...etc
I have played in bands and examined the music industry for about 6 years and all the really good bands I have met say that the only way to make money is to start playing tours that have venues more than a bar crowd (100+). Otherwise you usually end up breaking even, you hope.
For the mega rich popstars the game will still be the same. They will make $.25 on every CD they sell minus studio expenses, tour expenses....etc
A bunch of people have written on this subject. "File Sharing" is not a concern for me as a musician. You make money as a musician by working the road, just like every other business it is an every day job where you have to put in the hours each day. The only people really concerned about file sharing are those musicians who dream of a BIG PAY DAY or fear of having it taken away.Comment

Personally I think the RIAA should learn to embrace file sharing. There should be some built in fee involved. (no more then a dollar) per song. Of course you're still going to get people who offer illegal downloads but if a law is put on the books saying that downloads without fees is illegal then the RIAA would have more bite to their bark when they complain.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Interesting question from the lead singer of the Barenaked Ladies: If you were a musician and wanted to encourage file sharing, how would you propose you still get paid?
Take care,
