Things you miss about pro sports

I think i'll put this here.

The conversation about comparing Moss to Rice and then BK, ScottD and I talking about other great receivers and such makes me want to talk about something I miss in pro football. Now before I go on this can be anything you miss from great players, announcers, coaches, styles of play, whatever floats your boat.

Anyways I collect old game broadcasts of NFL games and I have to say the league may not have been nearly as killed in some areas as it is today but there was something about the players and the style of play that was you know, FUN!

You had guys playing with emotions, sometimes there were great catches and while there was some dancing and such you never got the sense that players were showing up their opponents. There were teams with nicknames like the Steel Curtain, The Electric Company, The Super Chargers, The Hawgs etc etc.

You had coaches who didn't disrespect their opponents (cough Billichick cough) and you had QBs that actually knew how to run an offense for cryin' out loud!

Ok well what do you miss about pro sports?

I am sooooooooo sick of the Belichick disrespecting opponents crying. That is what I miss about pro sports. It used to be about going out and doing your job, now it's about having a great team dumb itself down so the bad teams don't get embarrassed.

I guarantee you none of Belichick's peers feel he is disrespecting them by what he is doing. I bet they would feel disrespected if he had his 3rd string squad on the field to start the second half.

    ------

I miss the mean, angry mentality of sports figures. The ones who weren't content on winning, they wanted to beat you worse than everyone else. The players, the coaches, the owners... They all wanted to do it. This isn't a child's game. This is a game played by millionaires... Consistently compared to Roman Gladiators. Did Roman Gladiators show mercy to their opponents if they were that much more physically gifted or prepared? No, they did not, they took their heads.

Great thread. I think the players make way too much money to actually play hard. I am not saying they don't play hard, but I do question their love for the game. Back in the day when players made hardly nothing they still play the game, why? Because they loved the game. Now it is about how much money you can make and how many endorsements you can get. I do miss football when I was a kid. I just liked watching it and didn't really care about if my team lost or won. Now I get mad when my team loses. lol Mad, now that is funny. Though the older I get the less I care if they lose. I still liked watching Drew Pearson play and I liked watching Dan F and the San Diego crew. I was also a big Raiders fan, but SD was one of my favorite teams to watch. Jefferson was one of my all time favorites. I remember the goggles he wore. I wanted to get a pair like that. Until I found it is just his glasses. lol

Coaches back then didn't do that to their opponents, so think again. Also, how would you feel if some team kept doing that to you. Sure it is great now for you as a Pats fan. But think back when the Bears wax you guys so bad in the SuperBowl.

Back when my dad played H.S. Ball you couldn't even touch the guy. I don't know, I think a foul is a hard one to figure out.

Wasn't it a foul at one point if you put your hand up in your man's face while he was shooting... even without contact?

I believe so, every time we watch a game together, he always says that was a foul. lol I just laugh, but to me it would be pretty hard to not foul out of a game, if they went to those rules.

If we were back to those rules the game would have to end in a double forfeit by the end of the first quarter!

Yep, that is true. that is why I don't really care how they call fouls. It should be up to the individual ref for that game.

Boston teams sucking so we didn't have to listen to their (mostly bandwagon) fans.

Except they aren't playing the same team over and over. They are playing different teams each week. I was born in 85, so I can't think back to when the Bears waxed us. But honestly, it wouldn't bother me. They are out there to do their job, not show the other team mercy. That other team has $100M of talent on the field, why the hell should you show them mercy?

watch a NBA game 1996-97 and below in its entirety........you actually had to foul a person to get him to the line....what would get you ejected today was just a flagrant back then.....

If we can't ****ing stop them, then we deserve to get beat down. I don't see why that's such a hard concept. Then again, the whining about it is just another step towards the pussification in sports.

                              What I miss:
NBA on NBC. Greatest sports theme ever.
Michael Jordan. Just being able to watch him is something I'd love to do again.
Barry Sanders. Same as Jordan. His career was far too short.
                              Yankees winning World Series.
