The Lives of Others (German movie)

Wow. I watched this movie tonight on Blu-Ray and it is amazing. It won the 2007 Oscar for Best Foreign Film but has largely gone unnoticed in this country. Tough to summarize the plot, but it provides a glimpse into the surveillance tactics used on private citizens by the German Secret Police (Stasi) during 1984, years prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's in German with English subtitles and it's definitely not what I'd call a popcorn filck, but it features great performances by its leads and some really excellent screenwriting. They don't make 'em like this anymore in Hollywood.

Anyway, check it out. It's flown kind of underneath the radar but it shouldn't be missed. Also, I should mention that while the box art and description attempt to market it as some kind of erotic thriller, it's really not that type of movie. There's a little nudity and such in it and I wouldn't watch it with the kids or anything, but it's definitely not some kind of "Sliver" type of movie.

8.5 on IMDB, 93% on RT.

I've heard about it on NPR (They loved it). Never really got in the mood to see it. But now I think I might.
