    Laptops VS. Desktops

My desktop is slowly crapping out on me. The sound no longer works (w/ updated drivers), the computer is a lot slower, and programs constantly crash. I recently re-installed windows and its still the same problem. The computer is 5 years old, so its a dinosaur compared to what is out there now.

That being said, I'm looking to get a new computer. I graduate from college in May. Should I get a laptop or desktop? Pro's for desktops are price, speed, memory, RAM, etc. Pro's for laptops are accessibility and there isn't that much of a difference in memory and RAM if you upgrade.

Do you guys like laptops or desktops better? Price is a definite factor, but not the only factor. Would it be wise to have a laptop as my #1 computer? Thoughts...

    Re: Laptops VS. Desktops

I've been a desktop guy forever. But once I got up to school, I got a laptop. I cannot imagine ever being without it. Its great. Being able to take it with you to the coffee shop, or to class, as well as just lounging in your couch at home. The portability more than makes up for any shortcomings. IMO

I would get a laptop and just invest in all the upgrades.

Nothing like sitting on the couch watching football while complaining on message boards on your laptop.

I always had a dekstop and when I finally had the money I got a refurbished Dell Laptop and definitely am glad about it. Most of the time I do use it as a desktop, but when I need to use it as a Laptop (which is frequently), then I can.

Laptop unless you are one that upgrades components in your desktop a lot.

I used to hate laptops but I got a nice one and I love it. With that being said, if you don't have too much money you should definitely get a desktop since you can get a really nice one for half the price of a laptop.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

If you're not a PC gamer, the choice is simple -- a laptop. Set up a wireless network in your house and surf anywhere. Bring the laptop anywhere and hook up wirelessly.

I have a 2007 Lenovo T60 laptop, and it will play all but the newest PC games, such as Crysis. I have to turn down the graphics on some of the newer games, but they still look and play quite good. EA Sports games, even from this year, run great on the highest settings.

Any game from early 2006 or earlier absolutely rips on my laptop.

              Take care,
              PK

This is my plan in the next year or so...like PK said, it might not kill on the newest pc games after a little while, but I can deal...Laptop all the way, the mobility is worth so much more to me now that laptops almost rival desktops (not quite yet, but it's close enough).

Yeah, I'm not big into PC gaming so a laptop might be the way to go. I'm graduating in May and I think a new laptop would probably be best. Price is a factor though...

                    Bump.

If I did get a laptop, which brands would you recommend?

Depends what you need it for and how much you are willing/can spend.

I play games on mine but have a 360 for new games and I was on a low budget, so a refurbished Dell laptop was my pick and it runs great with no hitches. $579 spent including faster shipping.

My dad spent 1500ish on a new Dell laptop and he loves it...I forget the exact model, but he pimped out the memory, HD, video card, etc. He wants it to last a long time. I'm sure other brands are good too, that's just my only experience with laptops (aside from my awesomely expensive work Macbook Pro. I wish I could justify the price of this for myself).

Well I don't need it for gaming. Mostly just normal computer use, downloading some programs and software, etc. I would like a computer that runs somewhat faster and have a decent amount of memory but I can always get an external hard drive as well.

I was looking at Dell's as well as Sony's. Any other good brands? Are refurbished laptops really worth it for a big investment like this?

I've had nothing but Toshiba Satellites and IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for the last 13 years, and they've kicked azz. Not one problem.

My brother has encountered problems with his Dell laptops, for what it's worth.
