Federer gets it next year when he breaks Sampras' record.

In a shocking statement--I agree with this selection.

Payton Manning, he did win the SuperBowl in the last calendar year and was the SB MVP.
And no I am not a Colts homer, I live in Indiana but am a Cowboys fan.
Favre has won nothing this year yet.

Romo has been good for not even two seasons. Favre is an American sporting icon who has been good for nearly two decades and is enjoying one of his best seasons this year at age 38. He embodies complete love of the game and worked hard to overcome a shoddy season last year. He continued to play when most would have packed it in. Combine that with his struggles while helping his wife during her battle with breast cancer, and you have a superb Sportsman of the Year candidate.

Great choice, and I'm not even a Packers' fan!

If you don't at least respect Brett Favre, then you know nothing about football. If you don't like him, then your respect for the game could barely fill a thimble.

            Take care,

Manning would have been a fine choice. But you're naive to think that SI awards Sportsman of the Year solely on an athlete's accomplishments in just the calendar year in question.

The athlete's career performance and trajectory also are considered. So is the "story" surrounding the athlete off the field. Manning does a ton of great charity work in Indiana, as you know, but SI found Favre's comeback from a bad season, his wife's battle with cancer and his cult status among NFL fans a more compelling story.

But you certainly can make a compelling case for Manning.
