Recommend a good portable GPS system.

I plan on getting one for my gf for Christmas, I'd like to spend under $200.

Garmin, Magellen and Tom Tom seem to be the best from everything I've read/heard.

Are the lower end models even worth it or are they POS's?

    Any help is appreciated!

I have a low-end TomTom and it works great! My only issue with the device is that sometimes a location will be on the opposite side of the destination marker. It's happen twice since I got it about four months ago. I use it almost daily, and it's a great gift idea. The model type I have is the TomTom 3rd edition.

side question...Do you have to pay a monthly fee for these? Pay for updates? How does that work...just wondering, these are getting cheap enough it might make sense to grab one.

Nope, you just need to buy it. Free upgrades are available on the TomTom website via USB cable. You just have to register the product and they become available.

Wow, I've got to seriously look into these then...for whatever reason I thought it was more of a pain to maintain (like 10 bucks a month or something).

I brought a MIO DIGI-WALKER for my wife last year during BF & she loves-it. It cost me under $200.00

Amazon has it right now for $150.00

Nivek, does it have traffic software/updates included or does this system not support that?

Anyone have the Navigon? It is the one that shows road signs and such. I am thinking of picking one up at best buy for $199.99.

If you have a bluetooth or WiFi connection, you're able to connect to the TOMTOM service and get weather/traffic updates. I don't have that connected, but I read in the instruction manual that more information about that is on the TomTom website.

That's a huge misconception, I thought the same thing when I thought about getting one. I blame the automotive industry because before GPS systems were sold commercially, it was only available via a monthly fee in automobiles. Sort of like the satellite radio craze a few years back.

Does that include an additionally monthly service fee?

I doubt it, since you'll be paying for the ISP fee anyways. I'm not sure, I'd read up on the link I provided. It's a great device.

We got THIS ONE for my in-laws early in the year... and then had to have one for ourselves. It's great! We got a great price on it to. We paid $199.00 for each of them.
