Wrongfully convicted people do sometimes receive compensation for their time in jail. Amounts ranging from thousands to millions of dollars.

Several states actually have laws to govern the amounts given.

I'd be surprised if they even apologized to him.

Nah, I'm sure they gave him some money. Almost positive.

He'll be getting a VERY nice sum of money. I know my cousin was detained 4 months longer than his sentence due to clerical error and they gave him a check worth $715 for every extra day he spent in Jail.

Exactly...I didn't know some states have laws about this, but it makes sense....they want to make sure they don't have to pay 50 million or something

I say they pay him for any and all lost wages, expunge his record, as well as dismiss him from paying taxes for the rest of his life. Maybe even help him find a new job.

The Government stripped away 1/4th (more than that) of his life, they should at least help him financially. They should also erase every bit of his record that says he was in prison. Even though he was proven to be innocent, I'm sure if he tries to apply for a new job --with any records of his prison term,-- businesses might pass him over.

That's awesome. So not only do us taxpayers have to pay for him to be in jail, but we also pay the nice bonus they get.

Haven't I already seen this movie? The Hurricane. (great movie, IMO)

This is one of the few reasons why I'm against the death penalty in most instances. Unless you have absolute proof then you can't do it. A jury of your "peers" don't always get it right.

I say he should be able to commit 24 years worth of crimes on the "victim" and prosecution.

                        Or...100 million dollars.

Apparently, the old lady picked him out.

After that it was his word against hers, really. I'm sure everything they had on the act occurring was proven. The only missing factor was the actual guy and since the lady picked him the jury saw no reason to not prosecute him.

Unfortunately, for him, there was no means of testing a hair sample for a DNA match.

But he knew he was innocent all along and he remembered the hair sample being found in the scene. Once he realized that new technology could prove his innocence he applied to an organization committed to proving the innocence of wrongly accused prisoners.

He's lucky that the evidence remained, really.

That sucks, well at least they found out. Better late then never. I probably had some kind of record before.
