A technical question about the PS3 and my t.v.

My wife and I were in Target today and walked by a "blu-ray" display and my eyes about jumped out of my head. I could not believe what I was watching. It was definitely like walking into Costco and seeing all their expensive t.v.s showing off their graphics through hi-def channels.

Now, I have the PS3, the hi-def cable and a 58" JVC HD t.v. I have purchased one blu-ray DVD and that is Fly Boys as I thought it would be a treat watching the air battles. Once I watched it I was sort of disappointed and couldn't tell the difference between a blu-ray and a regular DVD.

I've heard you all talk about blu-ray, but am I missing something? Do I need to do something special when hooking the PS3 to the t.v., settings?, or was what I watching at Target just an illusion. I'm stunned by difference and need to figure out what I've done wrong, if anything.

probably better off asking in the ps3 thread in console talk or hdtv thread and you are going to need way more information then that to get any help.

How do you have it hooked up? Component, Composite or HDMI?

I have goodfellas on blu ray and spiderman 3 and the spiderman 3 movie is 100x better quality. It may depend on the movie.

As long as you have it hooked up with HDMI or component cables (red, green and blue) you are getting it in HD. What model # is your tv ? Do you know what resolutions your tv is capable of ? 720P, 1080i ??

As others have said, as long as you're using HDMI or component you should be getting good picture quality. It's probably just that particular movie....some look better than others. I was completely disappointed in the PQ of Miami Vice. Was very little difference b/w the HDDVD and the SD versions mainly b/c of the way the movie was filmed.

Try a different movie and see if the problem is still there.

If you really want to test it throw in an animated movie on BR, something like Open Season or throw in a movie like Crank and compare it to SD and you should most definently see a difference.

I posted in the console section a few things as far as checking your black levels, turning on super white full range ect...(this is if you have hdmi) I have a document at work I posted in the ps3 thread so check it. It comes with instructions on how to calibrate your PS3 with a sony blu ray movie and again checking your black levels.

Also some early on blu ray movies were transfered with old dvd technology i.e. mpeg2, the movies that started to show promise were kingdom of heaven, casino royale, 300 so it may just be a bad transfer as well.

Flyboys is a quality Blu-ray in terms of transfer and video quality.

                    From http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/553/flyboys.html

'Flyboys' was shot entirely with digital cameras, and the result is luminous, entrancing visuals that consistently dazzle. Say what you want about the film, but just about every frame of 'Flyboys' is the epitome of elegance and class.
That said, it has to be one of two things:

                    1) Your TV.
                    2) Your calibration.

I would say calibration can make a huge difference. How long have you owned your tv? Is it still using the "default" settings that it came with?

yes, those are the settings. Setting RGB to "Full" is more a trial and error thing. If you set it to "full" and fell the screen is too dark on dark scenes in the movie, set it back to "limited".

I also find that since I watch mostly HD television now, I don't get the "Wow" affect quite as much. What I need to do is set up a regular upconvert in my 360, a blu-ray in my PS3, and flip the tv between the 2, then you can really see differences. I'm just used to watching HD stuff
