    GPS Navigation Systems

I purchased my wife a GPS Navigation system for christmas. It was a ViaMichelin X930. Yes the Tire company. I have to say wow this little piece of equipment is very good, even in the towering signal jungle of Manhattan wow!!

I originally wanted the Tom Tom One third generation but heard some not so good reviews, not to mention it was sold out everywhere with the price drop. Wanted to buy some more for my brother and my best friend's birthdays coming up in the next few months.

Wanted to know has anyone tried the other competitors and what values did they find and were they any good. don't want to spend more than $200 on each one. I paid $160 for the ViaMichelin.

I went with the Mio c320. It was $149. Thought it was a good deal then, but even better when I found out I could download an Australian update intended for the $500 version that would make it truly text-to-speech (ie. it says street names vs. just saying turn left, right).

Also has a nice MP3 player, and is accurate. Downside is that it's not very intuitive and made for someone with smaller hands.

Thats a hell of a deal, I want a GPS unit but only one that does text to speech, and those arent normally cheap.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 650 that does that, it's a really nice feature to have when you are getting directions.

I bought my dad a Garmin unit for Chirstmas. Garmin makes some impressive units.

I wanted text to speech functionality but the cost is so high for those models. Text to speech would be great! However I wanted more an introductory system that just gave directions than a full works model.

Yeah. I was planning on returning it b/c i thought it did text-to-speech and didn't. Then i looked online and found the Aussie update. Now I'm a happy camper.

I'm just curious how much those of you that own a GPS system use it, an what do you use it for? To me they seem interesting but kind of expensive for something I don't think I'd use too often. They were a popular item this holiday season, i was just curious what all the fuss was about.

They're very useful if you go to another town or on vacation. There are also many places that I don't know how to get to in the city where I live, so I use it for that as well. It saves a lot of time rather than getting on mapquest and putting in everything and printing out directions.

I got the TomTom ONE 3rd Ed. for my gf for Christmas and then bought the ONE LE for myself w. my Christmas money. I love the thing, it's worked like a dream thus far.

I'm on the road a lot traveling to new clients/accounts. Sometimes I don't know the area so having GPS is a plus. Especially if I'm stuck there for a while. I go to the Points of Interest tab and look for what I want. Example: stores, food, gas, etc. Especially useful if you're out in the middle of no where and can't find a gas station and need one.

Their great when you don't want go to mapquest and download oodles of info and just want to go and get there. Saves time on trips out to shop eat and stuff and best of all they can recalculate different routes if you want to avoid a certain road intersection or the like. Especially if you take the wrong exit and can't quite figure out how to get back on track. Me and my wife have spent hours getting lost going to different functions or another because we took the wrong exit, made a bad turn and or missed one.

For me I want it because Im moving to the east coast later this year, or as early as March possibly, and since Ive never been there I want something so we can find our way around, and I will feel more comfortable if my other half has an easier time getting around as well. I wouldnt get it if I was staying in Oregon since we all pretty much know our way around here.
